Too early to think about gardening? Spring comes early sometimes

2014-01-20 - Harrodsburg, Mercer Co., KY - Photo by Mike Watson. It may not pay to think that growing season is a long way off, just because of the freezes we've had this year. There may be more snows, more freezes, but in the past several years, January 20 was well past the time to start watching for the first harbingers - most often crocus. Last year, the very observant Mike Watson wrote on January 8, of these fearless flowers, "This beautiful sunshine has coaxed the Harrodsburg crocus crop to sprout." CM posted the photographic proof on January 9, 2013 - and to think: Mercer County is way up north of his old Kentucky home on High Street. - CM

Epicurean Kentuckian: Introducing The Falafel Waffle

2014-01-20 - Shelbyville, KY - Photo by Pen. I think Falafel is delicious, but it seemed inconvenient to make at home, because it's traditionally deep-fried. At some breakfast in the recent past, the idea occurred to me that falafel might be delicious prepared in a waffle iron -- extra crispy, and easier to prep and clean up after. This first attempt was an encouraging disappointment. It didn't hold together particularly well, and it didn't brown evenly without extra olive oil. However, it was delicious on a Greek salad, and certainly proved the concept enough to plan further experimentation.

Scenic Adair County, KY: Seven story cliffside at Inroad

2014-01-20 - Inroad, District 3, Adair Co., KY - Photo by Linda Waggener. Everytime I see this cliffside along Powells Creek near where the Old Turners lived, I want think how to photograph it. Yesterday, I just did it. I'm fascinated by the stacking of the trees and the variegated patterns in the alternating dark evergreens and the hardwoods. It's so similar to random patterns skilled masons use laying brick, but more, it reminds one of mountainside stacks of houses on a Mediterranean coastline, in some Eastern Kentucky towns, and especially in parts of Knoxville, Charleston, WV, and San Francisco. This scene can be seen along Melson Ridge Road east of its intersection with KY 704, at Inroad. - Linda
