Montana has deep snows? Received this from West Coast

2014-01-27 - sent from West Coast - Photo from Ann Curtis Heskamp. The answer has arrived. See below
Can you guess the year?Folks are still talking about that deep freeze and deep snow Adair Countian Bill Troutwine endured in Montana. America has had many memorable snows, and some years just stand out. A West Coast reader sends this picture of a very memorable one which happened in the last six decades. A recent check of big snowfalls may make his/her coast - Alaska, Washington, Oregon and California the Land of Big Snowfalls. The picture she sends is one of those days locked in weather obsessed America's minds. Can you guess which of the 60 years in which it happened. That ought to be easy. Won't ask you where the old town is located, but is you should know or have wild guess, that would be useful. It didn't take Larry Walker long to figure the photo sent to us by Ann Heskamp Curtis from her late father David Heskamp's collection that the photo above is dozer is on Campbellsville Street at the corner of Campbellsville & Merchant. He wrote, just before 1pmCT, "That picture is the old GM dealership on corner of Campbellsville Street & Merchant Street here in Columbia, KY. Probably was owned at that time by Cotton Phelps. The year probably 1960. - Larry Walker And he is exactly right. - CM

A memory today: The Campbellsville Dairy Queen 1974

2014-01-27 - West Main Street, Campbellsville, KY - Photo from the collection of Larry Smith. When this photo was taken in 1974 the Paul & Frances Callison Dairy Queen was riding a long peak as a dominant destination in the Taylor County restaurant scene. High quality food served in generous portions, fast service, a family friendly atmosphere and being a place where everybody knew your name will make it a never-to-be-forgotten memory for those of us who frequented it. I know I'll miss. Right now, I'm staying hungry from the wonderful appetizing aromas of frying hamburgers and fries that I can't get out of my head. It's a Louie-Louie day at the radio station. I know I'll miss this place. - Larry Smith

Campbellsville landmark DQ closes after over 50 years

2014-01-27 - West Main Street, Campbellsville, KY - Photo by Larry Smith, .
Last night, Sunday, January 26, 2014
marked the end of an era. The Dairy Queen went out of business after over 50 years. It was built by Mr. Ores Royse of Columbia, KY, who made smashing success with the Columbia DQ store earlier. Mr. Royse sold the store to his Columbia, KY neighbors, Paul & Frances Callison, and the store, the first fast food restaurant in Campbellsville, was operated continuously by the Callison family.

Election 2014: (Ad): Josh Brockman for Adair County Sheriff

2014-01-27 - Columbia, KY - Photo Campaign Photo.

To the citizens of Adair County

I am thankful for the opportunity to introduce myself as a Conservative Republican Candidate for Sheriff of Adair County. I am the son of Larry (Chuck) and Cathy Brockman. In 2001 I married my wife Amy Sneed Brockman daughter of Gary (Archie) and Geneva Sneed. We have been lifelong residents of Adair County where we raise our 3 boys Leighton, Gavin, and Camden. We attend Bethany Baptist Church.

I began my career in Law Enforcement as an Adair County Deputy Sheriff in 2001, graduating the Department of Criminal Justice Basic Police Academy in 2002. Since 2001 I have completed over 1300 hours of instruction in police studies and application covering areas such as Accident Investigation, Criminal Investigations, Interviews, Community Policing, Leadership, Criminal Patrol and Drug Interdiction. Over the last 12 years I have trained at the city, county, and state levels. I am currently employed as a Patrol Officer with Columbia Police Department were I also serve as the Public Information Officer and Firearms Instructor. In addition to my duties as an officer I have served as a volunteer firefighter for 11 years , currently work part -time as a KY licensed E.M.T, and operate our farm with my father and brother in the Clay Ridge community.

The dynamics of Law Enforcement have changed; many of the approaches we have used in the past just simply don't work anymore. With an ever changing economy there is less federal and state assistance available, so we must find ways to improve our services with less. Police protection cannot become a burden to taxpayer's. If given the chance to serve you as your Sheriff I will:
- Serve in a fair and courteous manner.
- Work with the youth of our community and educate them on the dangers of drugs and the impact of crimes on society.
- Focus on crimes against persons and property.
- Work to recover stolen property and financial loss for business owners.
- Patrol the entire county.
- I believe in and will protect your Constitutional Rights and will not support or participate in any act that infringes upon these rights.
- Retain the current employees. The staff should be free of any political pressure.
Having been involved in emergency services for over 12 years I know that I haven't always got it right and have made mistakes but I have tried to learn from them and grow as a police officer and a person. I will try to see as many of you as I can but please forgive me if I miss you. I humbly ask for your support and vote in the May 2014 primary. Thanks. - Josh Brockman.

Think summer: Another warming photo

2014-01-27 - Greater Gadberry, Adair Co., KY - Photo by Charles Marshburn. Charles Marshburn of the Gadberry/Fairplay community shares the "Think Warm" photograph to keep psychologically comfortable in the freeze coming later this week. The idea is a corollary hundreds of former students of the late Mr. James Ennis, geography teacher at Metcalfe County High School used to tell students when they sat in humid, sweltering, un-airconditioned rooms. He'd tell the students, "Think Alaska", he'd say with a devilish grin in his eyes, daring any of his students to faint from heat and fall out of the uncomfortable chairs. "Think sunflowers" is a welcome thought, and a reminder that crocuses often are in bloom the first week of February. Linda Waggener

Swan Lake in Snow Time: Downtown

2014-01-26 - Downtown Fountain Plaza, Columbia, KY - Photo by Linda Waggener. Had never noticed, until Linda snapped the shotin the snow, how expressive the swan's eyes are. This one appears a little sad, perhaps thinking the snow would bring out hungry hunters. Taken Saturday, January 25, 2014. - EW
