Kentucky Color: Mystery in a cedar thicket

2014-01-29 - Adair County, KY - Photo by Billy Joe Fudge.
As I've said many times before, nature never ceases to amaze me.
The form of this three inch diameter Grapevine is an amazing natural occurrence. The way it stair steps up from the ground to the trunk of this ancient Eastern Red Cedar is such an unusual form and in my nearly 50 years of exploring the Great Wooded South this is the first time I've seen anything like it. Additionally, although it may look like it, I can assure you that the Grapevine is not growing out of the Cedar but has climbed all the way to the top of the tree. Can you see it? - BILLY JOE FUDGE

Kayaking Russell Creek in winter

2014-01-28 - Russell Creek, Adair Co., KY - Photo by Greg Thomas, Thomas Photography.
Even with the cold temperatures
I think we all agree Adair County is still a beautiful place to live. This past Sunday I took a couple hours out and went on a short kayak trip on Russell Creek. The snow and ice weren't all gone and the creek was very peaceful with song birds, wild ducks, and squirrels playing along the banks. I bumped the ice a couple of time to check it out but I didn’t do a re-enactment of the Titanic; I made it home dry and safe. - Greg Thomas
