Big Al, at McGavock High School
2014-02-04 - McGavock High School, Nashville, TN - Photo by Innocent Bystander. When he left home that day he just had no admission ticket, just a mission, to hear fellow Chicagoan Barack Obama. Above he was inside the auditorium, looking like a President of the Young Democrats and future Volunteer State U.S. Senator or more, ready to take his seat 20 feet from the President, and be inspired to get involved: Big Al Owens, frequent contributor to ColumbiaMagazine.com

Epicurean Kentuckian: Mrs. Greenough Salad
2014-02-04 - 14332 Burkesville Rd, Breeding, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener. Mrs. Greenough, the solid as a rock New Yorker who was on duty when the robber came calling on a 4-Wheeler to take money from the cash register at Breeding Country Mart, serves a dandy, fresh cut salad, whatever state she hails from; this one looked so good a second guest ordered one of the same as soon as his eyes saw the dish. But as if being prepared right before being served wasn't treat enough, the house ranch dressing came in a cute little serving tub, which translated to know need to call 911 for the Jaws of Life to extricate the salad dressing from one of those dammit single serves. Good job, Breeding Country Mart.Paired photo: See also: Phyllis Greenough: Robbed at gunpoint, but still at work - EW

Election 2014 (Ad): Joey White, for Adair Co. Jailer
2014-02-04 - Columbia, KY - Photo Campaign photo.
Vote Joey White, Republican Candidate for Adair County Jailer
To the citizens of Adair County-
I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself as a Republican candidate for Adair County Jailer. In 1987, my family made Columbia home when my Dad, Terry White was called to be the minister at Columbia Christian Church. I am one of three children of Terry and Marci White, of Columbia. I have been married to my wife, Elizabeth Burton White for 9 years, she is the daughter of Steve and Jacqueline Burton, also of Columbia. Elizabeth and I have one son, Carter, age 7 and a daughter, Makayla age 2. My family and I attend and serve at the Columbia Christian Church where I am a Deacon and Youth Ministry Team Leader.
In 1994 I graduated from Adair County High School. After high school, I attended the National Hardwood Lumber Association lumber inspection training program. In 1997, I started my career as a local business owner, operating B &W Lumber until 2000 and White Millworks Inc. from 2000-2013. I am currently self-employed as a lumber broker.
I enjoy serving and volunteering in the community, through the county's Little League sports programs, including coaching basketball, football and baseball, as well as being on the Little League Baseball Board. I am also involved in Upward sports, Relay for Life and Lindsey Wilson College football.
As a business owner I have managed up to 20 employees, while budgeting a 1.5 million dollar operation. I have experience with everything from supervision and budgeting to maintenance. I didn't just own my business, I worked along-side my employees to get the job done. My experience in sales has taught me to be a great communicator and negotiator. This knowledge and expertise will allow me to effectively operate your county jail.
I have prided myself on always being an honest, hardworking business man. If elected, I will treat the jail as my own business, always committed and dedicated to my job.
- I will keep the current staff.
- Everyone will be treated fairly and equally and with respect.
- I will always listen to new ideas from you, the members of the community.
I am excited about the opportunity to serve this county as Jailer, if elected. I am asking for your vote and support in the May 20th primary. Please know that I am doing my best to visit and talk with each one of you, however if I do miss you please know that your vote and support is important to me. Thank you for the support that you have already shown. Your kind words and encouragement have meant so much to me and my family.
Thanks to you all-
- JOEY WHITE

Phyllis Greenough: Robbed at gunpoint, but still at work
2014-02-04 - 14332 Burkesville Rd, Breeding, KY - Photo By Ed Waggener. Just 15 days ago, Phyllis Greenough was standing at this very counter when a man waring a hoodie came in and told her to put the money in a bag. "Are you joking?" she asked him. She said he pulled a gun, cocked it, and said, "No." He got all the money in the cash draw, hurriedly left the building. She didn't watch what he did, she said, "I was busy calling 911. It was over in 47 seconds," she said. She said she learned that the robber ran to a waiting four wheeler where another individual was waiting, took off and fire a gun into the air (maybe not in that exact order. She's just hoping the case isn't forgotten and the the two are caught. Breeding has been her home for the last eight years. She's originally from Homer, in upstate New York, between Syracuse and Binghampton. She isn't at all scared after the experience, she said. "I survived cancer, I can survive this." Apparently, Tuesday, when this photo was taken, nobody else in the community was afraid, either. Brooks Davis's store was packed, and Phyllis and one other cook were dishing out some real good hamburgers, fish sandwiches and fries as fast as they could make them. The robbery is being investigated by the Adair County Sheriff's office. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Adair County Sheriff's office at 270-384-2776. City Council meeting review options with General Fund problems
2014-02-04 - City Hall, 116 Campbellsville Street, Columbia, KY - Photo by Municipal Revenue. This graph, included in a detailed analysis of the City of Columbia's Financial situation, was presented by Lile Cheatham and Debra Stearman, principals in Municipal Revenue Solutions, LLC, of Greensburg, KY to the Columbia City Council at its regular February 3, 2014, meeting. While no action was taken at the meeting, all council members and Mayor Mark D. Harris appeared open to options which would alter the downward slide of the City's cash reserves, which has dropped from around $2 million in January of 2009, to just over $500,000 four years later, in January of 2013. While the study is considered by many in the community as a pretext for raising taxes - with the most frequently mentioned new revenue source being a payroll tax - the Council has approached it as more or a diversification or "balancing" of revenue sources.
