Historic Moment in Columbia: Two distinguished dudes, by Dalton

2014-02-05 - 104 Public Square, Columbia, KY - Photo by Dalton Crawford. They must be giants - The occasion was the presentation of the historic photo of the late R.R. "Pete" Walker with President John F. Kennedy and and then Vice President Lyndon Johnson, which had been published in the late '60s/early 70s, Columbia, KY, Daily Statesman,. I'm the properly tousled dude on the left; the tall, distinguished dude on the right is retired banker/farmer Lynn McLean. The historic moment is that this may be Dalton's first ever published photograph, taken as just one more of his chores while he was junior maitre-d'ing at his Mom & Dad's restaurant by the Fountain Plaza in Downtown Columbia, KY. A picture from History: Pete and the President

2014-02-05 - Campaign Trial - Photo from collection of Lynn McLean. Lynn McLean found this Columbia Statesman newspaper clipping among the photos collected by his late wife, Jean Dohoney McLean, of the late R.R. "Pete" Walker when he was Kentucky State Coordinator for the 1960 campaign of John F. Kennedy for President and Lyndon Johnson for Vice President. Walker served the party in many capacities over a long period, and got his first lesson in politics as a toddler, when Dr. Nell of Gradyville, a prominent Republican, hired him to serve lemonade at a Republican rally. Walker was fond of repeating the anecdote of the occasion at Democratic rallies. He would say that when he got home, bedecked in Republican campaign buttons and showing off the quarter he'd earned from Dr. Nell, his father, Hob Walker, took him out behind the woodshed and taught him that the Republican Party was no place for the little man. -EW.
