When Columbia had a daily newspaper

2014-02-21 - 108 N Reed Street, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener. The masthead from a Columbia, KY, Daily Statesman found in a newspaper clipping at the Adair County Public Library, is a reminder of the first days when Columbia had a Daily Newspaper and was the hub of a three state, 100 plus employee printing plant. Chart: Kentucky Education Technology System Escrow Money

2014-02-21 - 1204 Greensburg Street, Columbia, KY - Photo chart by Carla Perkins. The Adair County School Board mostly through a $25,000 grant from Duo-County Telecom, was able to free up $54,460 for improvements in technology in the district. The board voted to spend $2,230 to make the match possible. The chart above, created by Technology Director Carla Perkins, shows the amounts of KETS matching grants escrowed since 2011 and the time limits for matches. Supt. Alan Reed said he is hoping that state funding will improve with actions from the current General Assembly, now in session, and that the utilization of the KETS funds can be accelerated. Barring that, should other benefactors in the private sector follow the example of Duo-County Telecom, the funds could become available through help from the private sector or other local government and/or special taxing districts, too.

A tribute to Kody Pelly

2014-02-21 - 1204 Greensburg Street, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener.
Superintendent Alan W. Reed introduced a new graphic on a prominent front wall of the Adair County Board of Education with a quote from the late Kody Pelly (Kody Pelly, 23 - 1990-2013 - Columbia, KY ), a student in the Adair County system who left an indelible impression on perhaps more people than any other Adair Countian, ever, and especially on those who knew him at Adair County High. Soon, the blank space below his name will be filled in with a portrait. Soon, we hope, his biography will be written. - EW. Classic Clock: Taylor County Bank

2014-02-21 - 325 East Main Street, Campbellsville, KY - Photo by Larry Smith, The Big Dawg, 99.9 FM radio.
A classic Main Street fixture,
the clock on the Taylor County Bank's Main Street location, was undergoing maintenance yesterday, February 20, 2014, and couldn't help but notice how big it is - seemed to be swallowing the repair man servicing it. Have to appreciate how everyone up and down Main pay attention to details. Downtowns can work again. Main Street, Downtown Campbellsville is. - Larry Smith, The Big Dawg, 99.9 FM

Scenic Adair County, KY: Rounding crest, Dug Hill

2014-02-21 - Above Inroad, District 3, 2014 - Photo by Ed Waggener. Scenic Highway 704's curves are gentler now, since a recent reshaping on Dug (sometimes called 'Insurance' Hill) just north of Inroad. The view is looking north, to the plateau, with Hadley's Community Church, Fairplay, Gadberry, and Tabor communities ahead and between Inroad and Columbia, KY, a stretch of scenery unrivalled anywhere. There's a couple of informal pull-offs to enjoy the views, which deserve the kind of developed overlooks seen at Scott Ridge near Raywick in Marion County or at High Grove north of Bardstown, KY.
