Old Knifley: The L.R. Chelf post office

2014-02-25 - ACPL, 307 Greensburg Street, Columbia, KY - Photo from Dean Quinn collection. Dean Quinn provided this clipping of the L.R. Chelf post office, from Old Knifley. The store stood until the coming of Corps of Engineers and the big land grab which took out much of Old Knifley, including this store, then operated by Marshall Chelf, son of L.R. Chelf. The clipping is part of the Adair County Public Library's Genealogy Department folder, "Community - Knifley," which is one of a file cabinet full of folders on the communities of Adair County. Inside, the store was always spic and span, orderly, meticulously kept. There were seats and nail kegs for gatherings. Mom, Audrey Chelf Waggener, remembers that sometimes it was standing room only. And she remembered one old man who came in and found "his seat" taken. He walked back out on the plank porch, quietly, and started gazing at the sky, as if to spot an airplane. When the crowd inside noticed, their curiosity got the better of them, and they came out to get a glimpse of the rare sight. While their eyes were toward the heavens, the old man edged to the back of the crowd, went back in the store, and claimed "his" rightful seat. When the crowd returned, they were none the wiser of his maneuver. - ED WAGGENER

Pres. Hunter Durham recalls old Sparksville walking trail

2014-02-25 - Cranmer Dining Center, 430 Helen Flatt DR, Columbia, KY - Photo CM staff photo. Leaders of the Trail Town Initiative continuously find that much of the infrastructure for making Columbia/Adair County a part of the system is already in place, or may just need touching up to be a part of the program. Columbia Rotary Club President Hunter Durham remembered the Gilpins of the Antioch Community and a cross country trail some members of the family used to take going from Sparksville to Gradyville to School. "It was grand," he said. "Just in a short distance of maybe two miles you had sights where you could see Columbia, and then you'd go through woods and then come out in the valley." Durham didn't know if that trail is still walkable or available for renovation, but he did call for a vote to have the Rotary Club sponsor a Walk for the Trail Town initiative, which they did. The photo was taken at the Columbia Rotary Club meeting at Cranmer Dining Center, Tuesday, February 24, 2014. - CM

Ellen Zornes fires up Rotary for Trail Town initiative

2014-02-25 - Cranmer Dining Center, 430 Helen Flatt DR, Columbia, KY - Photo CM staff photo. Ellen Zornes, a member of the Columbia Rotary Club, delivered a comprehensive account of the Trail Town Initiative to a somewhat larger than ordinary Rotary Club meeting at Cranmer last night, Monday, February 24, 2014. At her side is Brenda Mann, who, along with Jelaine Harlow and Linda Waggener, are introducing the concept to the community. The goal of Trail Towns is many: A healthier community, greater tourism, economic development, more opportunities for people to enjoy an active lifestyle to their own tastes, from walking, to riding bikes, to horseback riding, canoeing and kayaking, to using parks, playing fields. Mrs Zornes told the Rotary that being part of the Trail Town system will help the community receive free publicity. She said that the state leaders are eager for Adair County to become the third county around Green River Lake to be a Trail Town community; already, Taylor and Green Counties have more advanced development, but with the enthusiasm she's finding, Adair County could blossom this year.
