Trail Town: Grimsleys are enthusiastic supporters

2014-03-16 - 801 Westlake Drive, Columbia, KY - Photo By Linda Waggener, CM Photo.
Charles and Holly Edwards Grimsley are among those helping Columbia move forward with the Trail Town application process, the subject of Thursday night's first public meeting. Charles has been identifying trails on a large wall map in his store on the square and welcomes anyone who would like to stop by and add a trail.

Sugar became Joe Ann's dog

2014-03-16 - Summit Manor, 400 Bomar Heights, Columbia, KY - Photo by Peg Schaeffer.
". . . I got a call from Summit Manor one day that a dog was found wandering in the parking lot.
Could I come and get it? I got there later in the day and was told at the nurses’ station that the dog was in Joe Ann’s room. Of course, where else would it be? I went to her room and sitting on her lap was a tiny, tan Chihuahua. Joe Ann and she had hit it off. Joe Ann had already named her “Sugar” and it was a very fitting name. I stayed and visited with her for a while and when it came time to leave I practically had to pry Sugar from her arms. They had bonded in that short time. . . " - PEG SCHAEFFER. POSTSCRIPT Sadly, Joe Ann Grant passed away this past week.

Mayoral candidate at Sportsmen's fish fry with No. 1 supporter

2014-03-16 - 411 Fairground Street, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener. Columbia City Council Member June Parson is the only announced candidate for Mayor, and she won't be subject to the Tuesday, May 20, 2014, primary election. But she was campaigning at the big Adair Sportmen Club Fish Fry, Stump Speaking and Auction last night her Number 1 supporter, son Jason Hawkins, one of Adair County's most popular men. She knows how lucky she is, "I know how important he is," she said. "He's the last person I would want to be running against," she said, "even if he weren't my son. Jason is a long time employee of Lindsey Wilson College and big supporter of Downtown Columbia.

Baby daffodils

2014-03-16 - Photo by Linda Waggener.
Daffodils are my favorite flower, right before lilacs so I couldn't resist stopping on South Monroe Street in Columbia behind Columbia United Methodist Church to take this photo. These are baby daffodils and were shining brightly in the Saturday sunshine. They haven't been tested yet to see if they also have that incredible sweet, gentle aroma of the old fashioned ones, but the look is perfect. Whoever planted them has my thanks!

Life in the Holler: And the cow jumped over the moon

2014-03-16 - Topside, The Holler, Old Clearsprings Road, Ozark, KY - Photo by Shamarie Claiborne. Chris Cowan out in Milltown, who is a great guy, allowed me to take a few shots at his house last night. Our children had been riding four wheelers and I was picking up Dusty at just the perfect time. Of course he said "sure, help your self." This frame said everything to me about farm life. The equipment, the fencing and, in the light of the full moon, took me back 40 years in my mind to what I thought a farm should look like in the song, "Hey Diddle, Diddle" by Mother Goose, when Jimmy Harper would sing it to me. All the elements were there, you can't see the little Blue Healer running around my feet, the full moon, the laughter from the kids... I was just waiting for the cow to jump over the moon! - Shamarie

Academics, health & safety priorities on ACHS campus

2014-03-16 - ACES, 870 Indian DR, Columbia, Ky - Photo by Ed Waggener. Leaving a lasting impression: Often it's subtle cues which impact the impression visitors get. We had that experience at Corbin High School. It's famous for its academic accomplishments, but only one in our party knew of it. On three different occasions we announced to our party that we'd seen a banner that Corbin, academically is on the 94 percentile! Yesterday, visitors from and to Adair County for a wonderful day and venue for baseball, could leave seeing that the district also puts top priority on academics, and, on the sign below, that health is important. Had they glanced over to Adair County Elementary and seen the huge 870 letters on the building, they might know how important public safety is to the district; they probably wouldn't have realized how much money that is saving a cash strapped 911 behind the scenes. Training dispatchers to get to buildings without proper signage is expensive at best, highly risky at worse. - ED WAGGENER
