Birds of Kentucky: Most charming of the charm

2014-03-27 - E Fortune Street, Columbia, KY - Photo by Linda Waggener. Lately, charms of two dozen or more of these delightful little American Goldfinches have been showing up to entertain us at our supper time. Some are brighter than this one, but none more stylish or well behaved. And to think, they entertain for the equivalent of chicken feed! - LW

The changing face of Jamestown Street

2014-03-27 - Jamestown Street at Gaston Avenue, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener. As one of the Shakers & Movers often says, "There's a lot more happening in Columbia and many people seem to think." On continuously changing Jamestown Hill - as well as Russell Road - that's very true. Last night, Wednesday, March 25 this was the look of one opportunity - the available for lease or sale Dicky's location, and the framing peaking from behind the Dickey's sign, where a brand new Taco Bell, will take the place of the old one, which carries the distinction of being Columbia's very first Mexican Restaurant. All of the area is helped by 'being in walking distance of Lindsey Wilson College,' and this area is near the increasingly important sports venue, Lindsey Wilson Sports Park. - EW

Scenic Adair Co., KY: Sunset on Sparksville Road/Ky 768

2014-03-27 - Sparksville Road, between Antioch & Chance, KY - Photo by Linda Waggener. Inspired by Sherry Phillips' mention of Daffodils in her daily quote for What's Cooking for Wm. T's, I went on a search for Daffodils in Greater Chance area. They were popping up in ditches and rights-of-way, and some whole fields were popping out all over. Always, when you search for one thing, other equally beautiful bonuses occur along the way. This silhouetted piece of timber loading equipment (a knuckle boom loader/bucksaw, we've learned from forestry expert Billy Joe Fudge) was one. It was too, a reminder for us tree-huggers that there is a season for all things, including the harvest of trees - that, indeed, the forest can be managed and provide economic well being as well as unmatched beauty. - LW

2014-03-27 - ACES, 870 Indian DR, Columbia, Ky - Photo by Alice Curry.
Adair County Elementary School
was the place to be yesterday, Wednesday, March 26, 2014 -- in particular in Mrs. Jamie Shelley’s 5th grade Science class. Mrs. Shelley’s classes have been studying Biomes/Ecosystems of the world as well as predator/prey relationships within those specific biomes. Her students have truly been enjoying their dissection lab work. Chloe Grider is shown here actually dissecting Owl pellets from a Washington State Temperate Forest Biome. Mr. Burton got so interested he wanted to lend a hand. Mrs. Shelley is helping give Science curriculum a good name - Way to go! Shamarie Claiborne. Adair County School District
