Cumberland All-Star Dairy Delivery van, Russell Springs, KY

2014-04-13 - Russell Springs, KY - Photo by Tommy Bailey. Can you imagine how this vehicle looked when it was new and the delivery guy with his white uniform delivered dairy products to your door? It's great just as it is, but wouldn't also be a delight if restored and made a feature of local parades and cruise ins. The wonderful old delivery van was seen in Russell Springs, KY. Additional details would be welcome on No. "10," its make (Divco?), vintage, drivers, territory. Anyone remember? Photo taken Saturday afternoon, April 12, 2014 by Tommy Bailey.

We fly the flag: seen through symbolic weeping cherry

2014-04-13 - Adair Annex, 424 Public Square, Columbia, KY - Photo by Linda Waggener. The future of weeping cherry tree on the Adair Annex lawn has been doubtful, at times, but always it comes through, this year in more glory than ever. Reassurance of the permanence of things of great value is central with the U.S. Flag brightly waving on a perfect spring day, Saturday, April 12, 2014. - CM

At CAUD board meeting, Thursday, April 10, 2014

2014-04-13 - 109 Grant Lane, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener.
Late in the Columbia/Adair County Utilities District (CAUD) Thursday, April 10, 2014, the discussion turned to security at the giant utility's main office, recently a victim of a destructive breaking & entering. Clockwise, from end of table are General Manager Lenny Stone, Vice Chair Tim Baker, Member David Jones, Chairman Robert Flowers, Member Barry Stotts, and Treasurer Rudy Higginbotham. In the background is candidate for the Democratic nomination for County Judge Executive Mike Stephens and CAUD attorney Marshall Loy. Also present but not pictured, besides the media, were Office Manager Jennifer Carter; Shirley Buckner, CPA, who gave the District a clean audit and positive numbers for the most recent fiscal year; and David Bowles, consulting engineer.

All's Well: The wild phlox are in bloom

2014-04-13 - Frank Dohonoey RD, District 4, Adair Co., KY - Photo by Linda Waggener. Yesterday was a wonderful day of sensory overload - Adair County at its best, and a relief for those of us who cherish all things lavender and lilac and things wild phlox - we called them "Sweet Williams" in Sulphur Well. It was reassuring and a relief to know they've made a grand spring debut at least as of April 12, 2014 this year. - LW

Adair County view of CAUD's newest water tower

2014-04-13 - Gentry Mill Road, East Adair County, KY - Photo by Linda Waggener. There's a blue two tone primer coat on the newest storage tank the Water Men - Robert Flowers, Barry Stotts, Rudy Higginbotham, Tim Baker, David Jones, Lenny Stone, Marshall Loy, et al - of Columbia/Adair Utilities have built, and this is the view from Gentry Mill Road, the scenic CR shortcut from the county line on the Russell Springs Highway to Sano Road. The tank will be seen much more prominently approaching Adair County from Russell Springs where it adds an interesting background to the Bethlehem Separate Baptist Church steeple. This tower will be much more simply labelled than other CAUD storage facilities, with a wrap-around "C A U D" in big letters, intended to be seen from Russell Springs Highway (KY 80) from both directions. The weather slowed finish up somewhat, but GM Lenny Stone said he expects the tank to be painted, inspected, and online in May 2014.

Senator Gregory at FM2, 2nd of 30 sessions, April 12, 2014

2014-04-13 - Adair Annex, 424 Public Square, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener. Senator Sara Beth Gregory (KY-16), left enjoyed a visit to Farmers Market on the Square, Saturday, April 16, and visited with Darrell & Sandy Scott of Shady Ridge Nursery, before visiting the Ag Expo at ACES. The Scotts brought Pink Dogwood, Yellow Dogwood, Snow Bushes, Barberry, Lilacs and Hostas. Peach, Pear, Apple trees to the market. Farmers Market on the Square - "FM2" or "FM Square" for short - is open 8am-1pmCT, each Saturday, April 6-October 26, 2014. Despite all the activity in Adair County yesterday, or maybe because of it, the street fair had a dramatic uptick in activity and sales. Many vendors had sell-out days. Barbara Armitage, Market Coordinator, says we haven't seen anything yet. "We had 11 vendors today, and that's a grand number. But as more fresh vegetables and fruits come in, it will get bigger." The main thing she said, is that everybody, sellers, buyers, and those just there to visit, had a good time.

Wildflower of KY: Woodland or Celadine Poppy - Wendy Burt

2014-04-13 - Frank Dohoney RD, District 4, Adair Co., KY - Photo CM staff photo. Wendy Butler Burt identifies this flower as a Woodland or Celadine Poppy after the question, below, was posed earlier this morning on CM: "Can anyone identify this spring blossom? It was growing in a cool, shady, wetland along Frank Dohoney Road. Couldn't find the answer is a very quick search of yellow flowers online - and not sure if it's a wildflower - it has many characteristics of melon or vegetable plants. We hope it's no mystery to a CM reader and identity will come soon."
