City votes to buy property for Town Creek Project

2014-06-03 - Campbellsville Street, Columbia, KY - Photo CM staff photo.
Following a brief executive session last night Columbia City Council voted to proceed with the purchase of a small plot of ground necessary for the Kentucky Highway Department's Town Creek flood prevention, safety, and beautification project. The diversion of Town Creek will go through the property, which is the triangle defined generally by the taller grass between the present Town Creek Bridge and the Parson House. The Columbia Cemetery Board is proceeding with a process under an eminent domain statute to obtain the Parson House and raze it. While the Town Creek Project would be easier if the Parson House were removed, removal is not essential for the stream realignment project. Work on the project was initiated in December after State Senator Sara Beth Gregory was shown the need in December 2013.

Academic? or Athletic? Papaw gets a smile

2014-06-02 - Centenary United Methodist Church, Shelbyville, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener. Evan Smith Waggener had a pretty good gallery for his 5th grade graduation. His Papaw, Ken Smith of Flat Woods (Greenup County; not one of the two Flatwoods, KY, in Adair; their Flat Woods has a Wheeler Hill Road, just like we do in our Flatwoods off KY 61), KY, we think, is mentioning a real highlight of the day, going to a Baseball Game in Louisville, KY, after school that day, while his Nona, Kay Smith posed for the family photo. She's a retired teacher, and, among other things, keeps the kids sights on academic accomplishments.

Burkesville Street, KY: Time to calm it 24 hours a day

2014-06-01 - 100-400 Blocks of Burkesville Street, Columbia, KY - Photo CM Staff Photo. The 2014, a Local Election Year may be an opportune time to reclaim Burkesville Street, with traffic calming measures. Simple measures would add badly needed parking downtown, make the sidewalk safer for pedestrians and the streets safer forcyclists, bring back more residents to downtown, and improve the health of the community, and for sure, improve economic development. Traffic calming common in Australia and Europe, according to the Traffic Calming entry in Wikipedia. Traffic Calming would reduce through traffic which was supposed to use the bypass, could increase accessibility for residents and office workers and those who wish to do business downtown. Significantly, this crosswalk is the scene of a horrific fatality just a few decades ago. Many believe that the time has come to return to a single lane of traffic around the historic Adair County Courthouse with automobile access and more parking, slowing but not eliminating motor vehicles, while also encouraging vehicles which take up less space. For sure, one traffic calming feature, a protected crosswalk at Jefferson Alley to protect bank employees, is long overdue. - EW
