Midwife Sophia Ellen Murphy and family, ca 1939 or 1940

2014-07-13 - Fairplay, KY - Photo from collection of Donita Loy Hortillosa. Sophia Ellen Murphy. In the photo with her is husband Andrew, standing in front of her is her grandson Stanley Murphy and next to him is her great-grandson Charles Cooper. She also delivered both these children. I am unsure of the date, but my best guesstimate is around 1939 or 1940, which places her somewhere around 77 or 78 years old. There is also a large wedding picture of this couple which hangs in Magnolia House Bed and Breakfast, which is owned by my cousin, Linda Lewis. - Donita Loy Hortillosa

Cap'n Hailey

2014-07-13 - Shelby County, KY - Photo by Pen. At left, Hailey poses with her new "jacket-life" and a paddle, ready for an outing on Clear Creek. At right, she watches her brothers in another canoe, as they continue their lengthy discussions about who gets to be captain of that vessel. That issue remained unsettled for the entire outing. Fountain and Historic Adair County Courthouse

2014-07-13 - Downtown Columbia, KY - Photo CM Staff Photo. The perspective with the water higher than the basket on top of the courthouse bring a memory of Mayor Walker's campaign promise to buy a city fire truck that could sit on the banks of Russell Creek shoot a stream of water over the courthouse.

Michigan Marker at Tebbs Bend Cemetery

2014-07-13 - Tebbs Bend Road, Taylor Co., KY - Photo CM Staff Photo.
Marker with longer narrative
errected July 4, 1989 by the Michigan Historical Society at the Tebbs Bend Cemetery, on Tebbs Bend Road, in Southern Taylor County near the Adair County Line. (A note: Does anyone remember how the late Miss Noma Dix Winston would have told the story in one of her U.S. history class at the Lindsey Wilson College in the 1950s. The South seemed to always nearly win in her version. - EW)

What topped the Confederate Monument at Tebb's Bend

2014-07-13 - Tebbs Bend Road, Taylor Co., KY - Photo CM Staff Photo.
Most likely would not know that the Confederate Monument at Tebb's Bend has some missing sculpture. Cheryl Tillery, the current President of the Tebbs Bend Battlefield Association, says that there is a piece broken off the top. She's been told some some that it was a spire. She's asking anyone who knows of a photo of the monument when it was originally erected to contact here at 606-303-2725.
