Great Mema's late night visitor. One
2014-08-22 - E Fortune Street, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener. This little toddler has fuzzed out and matured since the day over a week ago when we first met the kitten, placed on by its Mom on a porch chair, and whose mother continuously moves the baby from location to location. Plain Mema - Linda - has dubbed the kitten "One," thinking he is an only child. If we discover there are more, he/she can always be re-Christened "First," or "One-of." Try as Great Mema - Geniece - could, and she's a great conversationalist - her animalspeak is nigh perfect - the kitten remained notional, none too happy with the affection and he seems to communicate that with his ears. The whole Great Mema/kitten encounter was carefully monitored by Momma Cat whose unfriendliness makes one think she is not an "owned" cat, if that term is possible, but if the kitten is a member of a feral family and we never see it again, we'll probably always remember it. Even if it's weeks from now, we're at the supper table, no one knows a good joke to tell and Great Mema starts the most enjoyable time of the day, asking, "Wonder what ever happened to that little kitten - the one Ed found and Linda named 'One,'" kickstarting an entertaining session of stories; stories of the pathos of Neurotica, the antics of Kentucky, the wisdom and understanding of Bill Clinton, and other stories in the family series, the Cats of Our Lives. - ED WAGGENER

Prayers for Tony, for all firefighters
2014-08-22 - 200 Merchant Street, Columbia, KY - Photo by Linda Waggener. Crowds lingered after a moving prayer vigil for the firefighters injured yesterday in Campbellsville. The scene above after the vigil at the Adair County Fire Department Building on Merchant Street in Columbia. The service was initially planned for the lounge area, but was moved to the larger bay area, where pancake breakfasts are usually held. Ministers and speakers from Adair County's three fire departments - Breeding Area Volunteer Fire Department, Columbia/Adair Fire Department, and Knifley Fire Department - and the Adair County EMS gave voice, with prayers for all four of the injured firefighters and brothers and sisters in first response, but especially for Tony, who works in Campbellsville, but lives, volunteers, trains, and is so much a part of Columbia/Adair County. - Linda Waggener
