Fall is officially here today: And it shows
2014-09-22 - 6019 Russell Springs Road, Columbia, KY - Photo by Dana King. Fall is officially here TODAY, 22 Sep 2014. And on Russell Springs Road, Columbia, KY, across from the Christine Road cutoff, Dana King has a roadside stand at her parents', Don and Lois White's, home at 6019 Russell Springs Road, Columbia, KY, this Indian Corn is evidence. This is the fifth season the family has grown pumpkins for sale, and each year the line of edible and decorative pumpkins for sale grows. This year, Dana King says, already, "We have pumpkins, mums, straw, Indian corn, Cushaws, corn shocks, gourds, and pie pumpkins." The roadside market is open most of the time, Dana King says, and will continue through Halloween, October 31, 2014, If you want to make sure on market open times, call ahead, 270-634-2608. - Ed Waggener

Procession carrying Capt. Grider Home: Past familar places
2014-09-21 - Intersection Campbellsville Street & Merchant Street, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener. As the van carried the earthly remains of Capt. Tony Grider past the funeral home around the Square, it was meeting procession vehicles by then looped around the Square. It would pass City Hall, where the young man had served with almost boyish enthusiasm, embracing every move he saw as progressive, and where, in the immediate preceding months, he had continued to serve a passion of his, better parks or the youth of the community, as a Parks & Recreation board member. It would go past a Breeding Fire Department tanker, in the Municipal Parking Lot parked in his honor. It was passing, Merchant Street, where his "home" fire departments were less than a block away. It would circle the Square, where he had taken part in Downtown Days and an unforgettable campaign gesture, as dressed as a clown and handed out balloons at Treats on the Town, and where he regularly visited, not so much to talk politics, but to talk progress. NFL Gold Gold Posts
2014-09-21 - ACHS Stadium, 623 Indian Drive, Columbia, KY - Photo CM Staff Photo(s). If Jordan decides not to jump to the NFL but form his own Columbia Franchise, he'd have to choose between the two big-time stadiums. This one, Adair County High School Football Stadium is the only Adair County stadium with NFL gold goldposts, thanks to the vision of thanks to the vision of the coaching staff and Plant Operations Supervisor David Jones and the coaching staff. Jones reported to the September 18, 2014, that the posts were repainted NFL Gold, and that it took two gallons of $96/gallon paint to give the stadium a slight edge over most. - EW

Procession carrying Capt. Grider Home: Campbellsville colleagues
2014-09-21 - 200 Campbellsville Street, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener. On the right, Larry Walker, a member of an iconic firefighting family waves an American flag greeting members of Capt. Tony Grider's Campbellsville Fire Department, as units pass. Hardly a vehicle passed without occupants betraying overwhelming grief. Perhaps in no other area of life in South Central Kentucky have county lines been erased as they have been between firefighters; the selfless mutual aid between Columbia and Campbellsville is decades old. Procession carrying Capt. Tony Grider Home: The Moment
2014-09-21 - 200 Campbellsville Street, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener. Everyone knew, even if the Supporting Heroes van had no markings noting its role that this van was carrying the earthly remains of Capt. Tony Grider home to Columbia. The only sounds to be heard as it passed was weeping, choked back tears, and, overhead, the faint sound of high flying news aircraft. The van made a well deserved victory lap for Capt. Grider around the Historic Square Capt. Grider so deeply loved, to return a few moments later to the spot where Grissom-Martin Funeral Home director Blake Martin is standing, above, at attention. - Ed Waggener SEE: Anthony Lynn (Tony) Grider, Adair Co., KY (1973-2014)
