Nine duck races, and they've watched every one

2015-09-07 - Butler Branch, KY 551/Knifley Road, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener.
There may be nobody else who is not an official - not an organizer, a duck dropper, or a race steward - who can make the claim Daniel & Caroline Dixon of Bowling Green, KY, can make: They have attended everyone of the Wacky Quacky Duck races ever held - all nine of them. "We wouldn't miss it, Daniel Dixon," even though there record of never holding the ticket for the winning duck also remains intact. They do have differing opinions about the race. He favors the new, current location on Butler Branch. She wishes it were back at the Sulphur Hole on Russell Creek, remembering that first race, when the ducks for a time floated upstream, into the mouth of Sulphur. Maybe next year, on the 10th anniversary of the event, they'll win the Grand Prize. And maybe next year, the prize will be worth more than all the past one's put together. Maybe next year ducks will be sold at the event. And maybe next year, there will be concessions on the spot.- EW

Adair County Secret Park - secret to some, but already in use

2015-09-07 - 151 Col. Casey Drive, Columbia, KY - Photo By Ed Waggener.
Fast becoming an integral part of Adair County's park system - The Adair County Schools campus. It's long been a dream of many to make use of an obvious place for shared use of public grounds and to do so getting the most value for dollar spent. On a glorious Labor Day morning, today, evidence of the campus' value as a park was everywhere to be seen. This picnic area was developed by the schools' maintenance crew, who simply cleared out underbrush and added three picnic tables to create an instant picnic area. When the weather is favorable it's in heavy use during school hours. According to Supt. Alan Reed and the schools head of maintenance David Jones, it will, in time, be available for more use by the general public. In fact, they are now working with other community entities on the details already, dovetailing efforts with Parks and Recreation, the City and County, with Jelaine Harlow and Ellen Zornes' W.A.T.C.H. group, and with Mary Anne Loy, the leading advocate for better walking opportunities in the area. Security for the schools, student and public safety, are part of the planning. This morning evidence of utilization of the campus was everywhere already. Construction and maintenance was ongoing. A number of people were out "Walking their way to health," as Supt. Reed put it, on the campus, and beyond, on the bypass, runners could be seen. The magic of the place, the vistas, have always been there. Now, landscaping, new lighting is underway. The truly amazing thing is it's all being done despite serious reductions in funding, the campus transformation is the talk of the state, community assets are growing, and the balance sheet, like the campus, has never looked better. - EW. PS - If you see a board member - Chairman Floyd Burton (Div 4), and members Terry Harvey (1), Quin Lasley (2), Lisa Burton (3) or Mike Harris (4), tell them you saw, care, and appreciate the progress. They've got some of the toughest responsibilities of any, and they are doing it so well.

UPDATE - In a way, a part of Adair County Aviation History: Collector Doug Janes' was conducting an Antique Yard Sale this morning at 110 East Fortune Street, Columbia, KY, with this interesting item for sale. It's an assembled metal model of resembling a Curtiss Eagle trimotor biplane or a Boeing 80. (Not a Spirit of St. Louis, as earlier stated, Gary Rose points out.) The kit came in the box and the plane was assembled by the late Coleman Campbell, who lived in the house at the corner of Fairground Street and McKinley Lane. Among other things offered at the yard sale are: Vintage beer cans, soda bottles, soda crates, wooden crates, milk bottles, medicine bottles, tobacco and coffee tins, old flour sacs, FireKing dishware, primitive items like saws, sand buckets, vintage ladies hats, vehicle manuals and other items. Janes' yard sale is one of two advertised Mon 7 Sep 2015 in CM Yard Sales. - EW
