Adair County Schools receive $30,000 Crusade check

2015-09-22 - Adair County Schools, Columbia, KY - Photo by Shamarie Claiborne, Adair County School District.
Adair County Schools got more great news this week. The new WHAS Coordinator, James Maulden, presented Anita Goode, Director of Special Education, a 30,000.00 dollar check from this past years WHAS Crusade for Children. All the funds go to assist children with special needs. James was excited to discuss a few of the activities already being planned for this year which include a Pancake Breakfast in November, road blocks are scheduled for the first Saturday in June, and there are numerous other activities being discussed within the departments which include Columbia/Adair, Breeding and Knifley. Both James and Anita want to give a special shout out to Kim Pelley for her recent 5K Run in Memory of her son Kody. Kim donates all monies raised to the crusade. So anytime you can - please help our local fire departments and Kim to continue to make the WHAS Crusade successful and continue to benefit the Adair County Schools. - Shamarie

Window through trees and time

2015-09-22 - Woody Avenue, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener. The old house, long the home of the late Porter & Julia Conover, and their son Billy Conover still stands today. For many of its years basketball gym and grades 1-4 were right in front of it. Proximity to the gym may be what made Billy Conover an outstanding guard on Adair County High Schools' first two State Tournament Teams. The style of the house used to be quite common. The basic layout looks very much our our family's home on Jamestown Street. I'm wondering if anybody knows: It's basically a two and a half story structure. Our's was, too. The window under the gable looks like it might be for a finished room. Our house had only an attic, with electrics on the floor joists. I always wondered, growing up, what it would have been like have that attic finished. What a commanding view! Does anyone remember whether the upper room in this house was finished or faux? The Conover property is now being readied for sale by Golden Rule-Wilson Realty. - EW

Waiting for Edward D. Jones to open?

2015-09-22 - 326 Public Square, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener. The early bird gets first place in queue the worm, and this fellow atop a roof vent fan had the best seat in the house Tuesday morning to watch the passing parade on the Square. The photo was taken at 7:04amCT - maybe the starling is on fast time. - EW

Walking Downtown Burkesville, KY: Art is everywhere in

2015-09-22 - Downtown Burkesville, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener.
A scene in downtown Burkesville at dusk - dusk in the Cumberland River Valley, while the sun is still bright on the hill line across the valley. From left, the Cumberland County Judicial Center, the steeple of the First Christian Church, a timeless icon of faith and history, the lamp at the judicial center courtyard, and those whimsical fish, by Burkesville artists Pat Ritter and Charlotte Cash, who collaborated with David Waltz of Gradyville. The art adjoins a frequently used amphitheater. Burkesville is a ready-made walking campus, and at this time of the year, perfect for afternoon evening walks, though it is roughly comparable to Columbia for tripping hazards, and is equally as crosswalk-challenged. Photo opportunities are everywhere, so it advisable to take a camera. This photo was on an older iPhone - didn't have time to retrieve a better one. - EW. (There's a CM story with photos on the fish.
