Somebody has a green thumb at Green River Bait Shop

2015-10-07 - Green River Bait, 5240 Knifley Road, Columbia (Egypt), KY - Photo by Linda Waggener.
Somebody at Green River Bait Shop has a green thumb all the way up to their elbow. Didn't find out which proprietor is responsible - Lois or Kenneth Janes, but the blossoms are stunning. Yesterday, the Janeses told us they have now been in business there continously (except for a few months when Lois took a town job), since May of 1981 - over 34 years now. Quite a record. It's a clean, well-lighted place, with consistent service and a consistent menu, consistent hours, and consistent prices. Our favorite menu item there is the Pork BBQ sandwich, with lettuce, onion, and tomato and pickle on a soft bun. It's more like the Merle "Pete" Reed Dairy Queen BBQ sandwiches than any we can remember. Just remember to have deep pockets if you go. Our two sandwiches - the other tuna fish like you could get at great drug store counters of yore - a slice of pizza, a soda, a mini York Peppermint Patty to split for dessert, and a gallon of water, was almost $9! - practically half of what that much food would have cost most anywhere else, but well worth it. - EW

Helen Sparks: Isn't this a wonderful town we live in?

2015-10-07 - Downtown Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener.
Treasured Adair Countian Helen Sparks was Downtown Tuesday, October 6, 2015, previewing the Squarecrow street art and enjoying a perfect fall day. "Isn't this a wonderful town we live in?" she asked, all the while anticipating a chance to cross the street to see the whimsical characters in the Dollhouse Daycare and Williams Furniture entries by the Dakota Meyer monument on the Historic Courthouse Lawn. She's a Downtown Person; has been for a few decades - at least eight - and said she'd never seen so many faces, all smiling, as there were yesterday. - EW

Moths of Kentucky: ID needed

2015-10-07 - Columbia, KY - Photo by Linda Waggener, CM photo.
This little guy was hanging out right underneath a drive through window on Tuesday, October 6, 2015. He's pretty, but we're a little afraid to brag on him not knowing his name, much less whether he is, indeed, a good moth or a bad moth. Can anybody help? - EW
