You know those walnuts I've been gathering? This is a photo of my assistant, the cat who thought he could roll over them and kill two birds with one stone, sort of. Rolling over the walnuts helps get the pesky husks off and gets credit for the cat, and rolling over the walnuts gives one such a good back rub without troubling the human for one. Paired Photo. It's time to gather all the walnuts that have fallen to the ground along with the leaves. Some walnuts are still in full green husks which are hard to break through, some are partially hulled and a few are skinned to their shells by Mother Nature or by squirrels that tried and failed to get to the interior. This is a large fossil spider from an ancient lake deposit in northeastern Brazil. It was alive about 100 million years ago and likely spun orb-shaped webs to catch prey. - MATT DOWNEN
