Actress Kelly O'Connell Brengelman, seated at right, took students, faculty, staff and friends back about a hundred years into the life Madeline McDowell Breckinridge, a state and national leader in the woman's suffrage movement, Votes for Women! Seated at left is Phil Hanna, LWC Library Director; in back from left are: Bill and Beth Coleman, Barbara Armitage and new Columbia resident Frieda Cook. The presentation showcased Madeline "Madge" Breckinridge (1872-1920) who played an instrumental role in getting Kentucky to ratify the U.S. Constitution's 19th amendment, which granted American women the right to vote. She was the great-granddaughter of Kentucky statesman Henry Clay, Breckinridge. In addition to working tirelessly for women's suffrage, her life, cut short by Tuberculosis, was spent working to advance the living conditions of the poor, establish programs for education, change the outlook for child welfare and juvenile rehabilitation, and to promote the need for tuberculosis research.
