A Columbia Adair County Chamber of Commerce ribbon cutting ceremony officially opened the Adair County Public Library's Monarch Butterfly Waystation Wednesday, June 15, 2016. The Waystation is the result of many hours of work by the Adair County Garden Club and the library staff. The Waystation is the fourth one in Adair County. Wendy Burt, Martha Chamberlain, and Betty Knifley have waystations at their homes. A fifth Monarch Way Station is planned at the Trabue Russell House. Hollyhocks in bloom take me to Addie's kitchen window 2016-06-15 - Adair County, KY - Photo by Linda Waggener, columbiamagazine.com. Walking past the back of the bank in June in Columbia, these Hollyhocks give a bright wave and send my memories straight to the back yard outside Grandma Addie Turner Leftwich's kitchen window. That's where I first met the flower. You can imagine that a not-beautiful yard which had been trampled by nine children and dozens of grandchildren over many years would have few if any flower gardens. However, hardy Hollyhocks prevailed and dominated the yard between the smokehouse and the orchard fence row which offered too little space for kids to run through. They were old stalks that grew tall and dared kids to pick any of the pink and maroon blossoms.
