A trivia question which may have kept many readers awake at night: What do Kentucky's Major Outdoor Arena's - Commonwealth Stadium, Trinity High School Football Stadium, and the Adair County Fairgrounds all have in common? At least one answer is: Alum-A-Stand seating, manufactured by Dant Clayton in Louisville, KY. A visit to the company's website: Dant Clayton shows that the Adair County Fairgrounds is in very good company nationwide with this choice of seating. There may be a few people who recognize all the people in this photograph taken of personnel, routemen and production workers at the old Dr. Pepper Bottling Plant on E. Fortune Street in Columbia, KY. It was owned and managed, at the time by Rives Kerbow and/or his father, who came here from Greensville, TX to manage the franchise. Rives Kerbow was later Mayor of Columbia. His wife, Hqzel Kerbow, was a very popular teacher in the Adair County School System, who regaled classes in the 1960's with memories of the time she dated Lyndon Johnson, who, on a national level was Chief Executive officer, just as her husband was of the Dr. Pepper Plant and of Columbia. (A story on the Kerbow Administration by JIM is at Columbia: A Happening Place (1948 style)). The era of the photo above may be determined by a car year expert. A curious note: the two coupes? The drummer's coupes? Does anybody remember the sign which sits atop the one on the right? The building, located on a part of the lot where the Municipal Parking lot is now, was later the home of the very prosperous Rogers Fertilizer Company, a later razed. The Dr. Pepper Plant went out of business sometime after Columbia battling competition from a competing Columbia bottler, located where Jeffries Hardware is located today at the top of Jamestown Hill. There are no scheduled events today, but little touches, like the grading of of the track, a few cookhouses and snack trailers in place, and a manicured infield are all evidence of the big week ahead. The Fresh Air Produce sign has one rule most would like to see universal "Modest Dress Required" at all retail establishments. It caught my eye. It wasn't our destination, and we didn't expect to find the "Open" sign still up late Saturday afternoon, but were presently surprised to find the family operated business open and welcoming when we drove up - and very friendly even after our purchase totted up to less thank $10. The mission was to do a drive by - but not a surprise drop-in, at the Whitehurst Estate, and to see if "Joe Pye Weed (is) peaking in Pellyton" (there's a country music song in that, we're sure), but it wasn't. Getting back down off Sanders Ridge is a Smoky Mountains Thrill, for those when enjoy spectacular vistas, not so much for the pilot of our little wind-up Mazda, who almost froze up with an acrophobic attack, right above the Boss Blair chalet.
