The most beautiful urban landscaping: Town vegetable gardens 2016-07-10 - Downtown Columbia, KY . There is nothing prettier than a town vegetable garden. Time was, this would have been considered tiny. Our own on Jamestown Street, planted to help feed a family of eight, was nearly an acre. Almost every family had their own. It was considered sorriness not to have your own, and buying tomatoes in summer time was practically a mortal sin. Some were prettier than others. Some were the center of conversation, like the most perfect and most highly productive one watched with anticipation each year at the corner of Russell Road and Wright Drive, grown by Dorothy and the late John Shelley. Or my neighbor Ralph Willis fabulous tenth of an acre garden on Jamestown Hill. Today, everyone who uses the Hurt Street short cut must admire the stick beans at the garden at Willis & Hurt. It's a blessing for sure, having your very own fire hydrant, your very own "wid," for sure in case of fire. It does mean great water pressure, and after it gets its monthly flushing, the water tastes like it came from a spring. But he still needs getting used to; after more than a year in residence, it's still startling to look out our front window and have it pop into sight like an alien or a red painted "Despicable Me" minion.
