Stevien Handy a long time resident of the north side of Russell Creek in Columbia, was one of the early residents checking on the pileup of debris under the Russell Creek Bridge. He said he'd seen debris longjams as great before, and the creek at a much higher level. He remembers a flood in the 1980's when water came over the bridge and up to the porch level at the historic Sandusky home. Viewing the pile up with one fallen tree of about 10 feet in diameter, he commented on the stress it put on the span.
