Brown on top Knob

2016-09-26 - West of KY 61 at Phillip Garmon Road, Burkesville, KY - Photo by Linda Waggener, ColumbiaMagazine.com (c).
Some of the trees on this knob are turning an Oklahoma like reddish brown. Strikingly enough that one wonders if this is the natural fall sequence or if this year there might be a stress on some species. If there is a knowledgeable forester in the audience, enlightenment would be especially welcome. - EW

Wildflowers of Kentucky: Orange Jewelweed

2016-09-26 - Along an Adair County, KY Byway - Photo by Linda Waggener, ColumbiaMagazine.com (c).
This delightful little flower - if our ID is correct - is pretty and useful, at least according to wikipedia.org/wiki/Impatiens_capensis. The article says it the plants leaves and stems render an ointment useful in treating poison ivy rashes. It lists other names: Impatiens, and touch-me-nots. According to the article, the orange jewelweed is common. But a variant, yellow jewelweed, is not, posing the question: Does any reader know of any yellow jewelweed in this area. - ED
