The community is still reeling from the bombshell announcement at last night's Adair County School Board when Superintendent Alan Reed announced his retirement effective December 31, 2016. While most of the school staff and teachers were aware it was likely to happen, for many in the audience, press corps, and general public were caught completely off guard. With him, right, above, is Board Chairman Floyd Burton, who has been a stalwart supporter of the programs Supt. Reed used to get results, helping students formerly left behind find a place in the school and graduate ready to go to college and/or have a good paying career, and significantly lower the cost of getting a college education along with it. Adair County Middle School Principal Alma Rich told the assembly for the November 17, 2016, regular meeting of the Adair County School Board that Skylar Hare, the ACMS sixth grader towering over her, did not dress up just to lead the Pledge of Allegiance. "He comes to school every day in this or similar attire," she said. "He announced that he wanted to 'dress for success'," she said, adding she had no doubt he would find it, as an elected official, a governor or perhaps a senator, "Maybe one day he will be President of the United States," she said. Skylar was accompanied to the event by his parents, Jennifer and Mike Cook, and younger brother Ethan. Hare's clear voice delivered the oath with the eloquence of a Speaker of the House, and drew a sustained round of applause. Adair County Elementary School (ACES) Principal Steve Burton, Dean of Students Robbie Harmon, and ACES Assistant Principal Sommer Blair hold the attendance banner awarded their school as the highest attendance winners in the District for the 2015-2016 school year, with a 95.79% attendance.
