The Community got the stunning news Thursday evening here, about an hour after this photo was taken, that Supt. Alan Reed would retire December 31, 2016. In his brief tenure as Superintendent, he did as much as any other Adair Countian ever, to advance the educational and maybe more importantly, the economic position of all facets of the local economy - education, itself, manufacturing, agriculture, tourism, health and other facets - of the county, and it was all done in the face of shrinking financial support for public schools in Adair County and across the state. Now there is an uncertainty about the future of those Adair County School District gains, and with it, an uncertainty about the very future of Adair County. Local leaders are hoping for the best. Downtown Columbia, KY: Maple tree removal Thu 17 Nov 2016 2016-11-19 - Historic Adair County Courthouse, 500 Public Square, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener, ColumbiaMagazine.com (c). The largest of the courthouse trees, the maple facing Jamestown Street, was removed Thursday evening, November 17, 2016, by Mike and brother Chris Wall of Barns & More (the "More" is tree work, which is very busy this time of the year), and his uncle Gary Melson, who is in the bucket. On the ground is Chris' and Mike's father, Donnie Wall. The tree was completely removed Thursday night and the limbs were hauled away.
