Remember this? you may be out of warranty: Ben Franklin opening 1961

2016-12-14 - 300 Quadrant, Public Square, Columbia, KY - Photo from the collection of Mike Watson, Adair County historian.
Mike Watson sent this Keepsake Ad clipping from the Adair County News of a bit over 55 years ago. The Ben Franklin store was advertising its Thursday, September 21, 1961, Grand Opening. The business was owned by the Milhar Corp - anyone remember why that name? - and was a must-visit-after-school destination for thousands of school kids in it's long reign, before the advent of the first Columbia Walmart, as one of Columbia's most popular ever venues. Comments, additional information welcome. - EW

Mystery photo, Columbia, in days of Rialto Theatre, Russell & Co.

2016-12-14 - 100 Block, Public Square, Columbia, KY - Photo from the collection of Vonnie Kolbenschlag.
Can anybody help put this favorite old photo in perspective? It happened on the public square in Columbia, KY, in front of what may have been Motor & Electric, then, now Mackie's Photo-Video. The Rialto Theatre can be seen in the background as well as part of the store front at Russell & Co. Department Store. The Bank of Columbia building had not been remodeled. Does anyone know the occasion of the event? The riders? The kid in the overalls? The little boy on the right in the background? The man under the "R" in Rialto? If you do, use the Comments link with this picture and send your information. This is, obviously, an important part of Columbia history. - EW

Supreme Court denies discretionary review of 2014 Mayoral Race

2016-12-14 - Photo photocopy from Columbia Mayor Curtis Hardwick.
The Commonwealth of Kentucky's highest court has denied a request by Attorney Elmer George, representing Dr. Ben Arnold, a right-in candidate for Mayor of Columbia in 2014, for a discretionary review of the election. The order was entered Thursday, December 8, 2016, and Mayor Hardwick said he received a copy of the order today from City Attorney Marshall Loy. "It's the best Christmas present I could have received," Mayor Hardwick said. "As far as I'm concerned, I want to think it's over now, but it will depend on what the other side does next." Ben Arnold, "the other side," reached by phone today, said that he has a call in to his attorney to see what options he has and will make a further statement once that has been discussed. - EW
