Alphabird and flock of guinea fowl
2016-12-23 - Northern Adair County, KY - Photo CM windshield cell-phone photo. Couldn't help but slow and watch what may be the biggest flock of guinea fowl in these parts, and couldn't help but notice, that, this wind-ruffled but otherwise stunning rooster still asserted his alpha-bird command, even though the 11 birds in the frame were just a small fraction of the flock which overwhelmingly out numbered him. The guineas "talked" the whole time we waited for the guineas occupying the roadway in front of our car to leave, absolutely of their own accord. Talk about notional birds - they are. To tell the truth, the guineas chatter was as pleasant as as the din of happy diners in a warm, welcoming restaurant or the song of peepers on a summer's evening. Photo 22 Dec 2016. - EW

Winter Solstice: The lane slopes uphill toward our house
2016-12-21 - On Sanders Ridge, Pellyton, Adair County, KY - Photo by Sharon Whitehurst (c). As the lane slopes uphill toward our house the valley narrows, the steep ridges move closer, holding the buildings in a wedge of open space. Jim has built a fire in his shop and the smoke rises to mingle with the grey plume drifting from the house chimney. - SHARON WHITEHURST
