Lindsey Wilson Bonner Scholar Lindsey Daniel of Russell County, KY, told those in attendance at the March 16, 2017, meeting of the Adair County Board of Education how important the work of the Camp Casey program is. "She volunteers in Camp Casey and the impact of that program is what she credits for educating her to the needs of our communities children," Dana Harmon, Camp Casey Director, said. "Unlike the Family Resource Center, 21stCCLC CAMP CASEY addresses the academic needs of our students throughout school time programs before and after school and in the summer. After school students get a snack and during the summer they get hot breakfast and lunch through the USDA school meals program." Director Harmon shared the words Lindsay Daniels spoke at the Thursday, 17 Mar 2017 Adair County School Board session: "Prior to serving at Camp Casey, I wasn't aware that 27% of Adair County residents are living in poverty. However, when a little girl was caught sneaking a leftover Rice Krispies treat into her backpack just so she would have something for dinner, I saw that statistic in action. I wasn't aware that only 15.9% of residents have college degrees, But that was brought to life for me when I learned that the assistance I provide during homework help is the only way that a child will learn how to spell words like "cat, dodge, truck. . . Through serving at Camp Casey, I've been inspired to pursue a career in counseling to ensure that future students know that they are worthy of being invested in. The future of this community lies in the hands of the students that we serve on a day-to-day basis. Only 75% of the residents in Columbia graduate high school or have a GED, but the encouragement, attention and example we exhibit to the students at ACPC could inspire them to to recognize the importance of attending college and giving back. ACMS students Mirah Murphy, Jessica Hamlett regional winners 2017-03-17 - ACMS, 322 Gen. John Adair Drive, Columbia, KY - Photo by Deb Waddell. The Adair County Education Association (ACEA), the Middle Cumberland Education Association (MCEA) and the Kentucky Education Association (KEA) are proud to announce Mirah Murphy and Jessica Hamlett as regional winners in the recent "I Love My Public School" campaign. Both are students at Adair County Middle School. Mirah, the daughter of Sheila and Marion Murphy, wrote a great essay about why she loves ACMS. Jessica, the daughter of Sharon and Richard Hamlett, created a beautiful sketch of what she loves about ACMS. All three organizations were proud to present both young ladies a check for $25.00 and congratulated them on their achievement. Essays and art work from students across Kentucky is displayed at the state capitol in Frankfort, for all of our legislators to view, during March. As an addict, you don't know the structure of life any more, but the way to help is through programs like this, and also to just say 'I love you and encourage you.' The first of several public drug forums, held March 16, 2017, had to be moved from the originally scheduled City Hall to the Judicial Center courtroom due to the large crowd. Upwards of 70 people attended the event. Officials opened discussion of the growing drug problem and its effect on life here.
