Juxtaposing eras: The augur on horizontal bore machine and the blossoms on old fashioned pear trees promise the best of progress and the best of the past this summer on Harvey Ridge. The machine was placed on the road as part of the massive mobilization by Stotts Construction of Columbia, KY, to aim for an accelerated completion of a new main from Sparksville to KY 704. This machine is in use today, April 4, 2017, to complete a 120 ft. bore. At the same time, pipe laying is underway from the Antioch segment of the road. The contract for the project allows for six months completion, but Columbia/Adair County Utilities General Manager Lenny Stone said that it is possible, based on Stotts' Construction's past performance, for the project to be completed in half the time. David Bowles' Monarch Engineering is providing design plans. The pear trees performance will depend on a lot of things, but hopefully they will perform as well as the Columbia contractor and Lawrenceburg, KY engineers have done in the past. Each week, students are given a list of words to study, and learn to spell and write. In Kimberly Clark's class, students recently played games to help learn their words. One of the games involved students using clothes pins with letters written on them to spell their words. The horse only provided me with a few seconds of posing before it galloped off to regroup with other horses in the field. From his motorized chair, Mike Bell challenged Columbia City Council members to borrow the vehicle and experience what he and others experience every day just to move about their neighborhoods. "This city has a miserable track record when it comes to sidewalks," he told them. He told them that his problems are great, but asked them to consider the spouse/caregivers - most often wives - who push wheelchairs along the streets. They are the ones who really suffer from the neglect.
