The Dogwood Tree, symbolic of Easter, is coming into full bloom across south central Kentucky this holiday weekend. The legend Christians pass down says the tree was once mighty and strong until it was used for the cross on which Jesus was crucified. After that the tree would never be allowed to grow to the strength it could be used for that purpose and each blossom on the tree would have two long and two shorter petals, in the form of a cross. Canadian Goose heads down West Sulpher Creek Road 2017-04-16 - Adair/Russell County KY line, best we could tell - Photo by Ed Waggener. This Canadian Goose, clocking about 10 mph, might be a local resident -- or might have just landed to get a closer look at country roadside scenery on Easter eve. These birds migrate over North America in spring and fall so it's likely a traveler. However, Canada Geese can be found on large bodies of water including our lake areas and even on large ponds which are in abundance in south central Kentucky. You might call it Adair County's own Easter Lily, this gentle and delicate Trillium, is found in its early and late colors above Russell Creek at the Gentry Mill Road crossing. It is white when it first blooms, then turns pink as it ages. It is found in damp draws around the region at this time each year. It is complemented here by lavender Sweet William blossoms.
