KY Color: Dead American Chestnut still puts up shoots 2017-05-12 - Green County, KY - Photo by Billy Joe Fudge. Look what I discovered yesterday while walking in the woods in Green County. No, not my Pa Fudge's walking stick but the recently deceased American chestnut. Actually, the tree is dead but the roots are still alive. The blight which kills the American chestnut cannot live in the soil so the roots continue to live and put up shoots on a regular basis that make enough food for them to continue the life process.
