Columbia has done one thing as well as any where: Maintained public housing as a a Great Place to Call Home (Paula Propes motto for Columbia-Adair County). With landscaping, holiday banners, sidewalks, and speed bumps, it is one of the safest neighborhoods in Columbia. The view from the Adair Judicial Center does include a reminder, with the flags at half staff, of the sacrifice made for us to enjoy a near perfect day with friends at the market. The temperatures had moderated because of a coastal storm, but at this moment on Saturday, June 24, 2017, the tent city which sprang up before 8amCT couldn't have been better with air conditioning. Too, in its new location, there's access to public restrooms in City Hall, a veritable Greenwood Mall Food Court with the ready to eat food stalls, the freshest produce on the planet, crafts, and planned entertainment everywhere. A no-show entertainer last minute cancellation may have been a benefit. There was local street entertainment with a medieval flair. It's been years in the making, and yesterday was an example of what can be for Downtown Columbia. When people gather here, it can be the most delightful place on earth. - EW. This delightful little falls occurs at the junction of the Big and Little Renox Creeks, just before the two creeks merge and pass under the Highway 61 bridge that heads in the direction of Burkesville. The Falls (Little Renox) I suspect is dry most of the time, at least it was when I visited this spot back in the winter. Adair County Judge/Executive Michael Lee Stephens reported "a great blessing" this week with the all-clear from his doctors and release from rehab. His first quarter of 2017 was very different from what the busy judge and developer had planned. In early January a health challenge sent him through surgery and the following long, careful recovery. A noble neighborhood cat which my late mother-in-law loved, gave sanctuary at our house, and named when it visited, "China," still comes to dinner stays a while, and establishes its reign so very dramatically. China's throne on Saturday, June 24, 2017, when we arrived home was the peak of the carport roof. Sending a message. Maybe it wasn't "I'm China. I rule," as cats are wont to do. Maybe it was this message we understood: "Remember The Lady who loved us with hospitality and food and extraordinary kindness." We wanted to talk to China, but, as most humans do, we never learned the language until after it was too late. By the way, "China" is a welcome visitor today, not only for what he meant to Geniece Marcum, but because of his magnificent beauty.
