A BBQ pork shoulder plate at Breeding Country Mart is powerfully good, spicy enough to bring tears of endorphic joy when ordered "hot" as with the plate above. That's two perfectly thick slices of shoulder, enough that many will want to start the meal with a take home box for their next meal or two. The vinegar slaw is an old family recipe, and could only taste better with the addition of the hot sauce, created from an old family recipe from a Dale Hollow lakeside BBQ restaurant. The potato salad serves as a side or as a dessert - it's that good.. The white or "light" bread as a fire extinguisher when a bite is just too potent for even experienced pepperheads. The drink, our reviewer says, is "Mexican Tea," and is served only six days a week. Never on Sunday. It's a rather curious approach to the adult "Tea," served over salted ice with some lemon juice (one has to carry in her/his own lime; that's not a regular house item. The only thing to add beauty to the already extraordinary hills and valleys of south central Kentucky is a surprising colorful blossom to make us take a second look. These fiery orange Gladioli, sometimes called a sword lily, were simply "Glads" when I was growing up. And they were pink and they were "Isabelle's Glads," so named by my Grandma Leftwich who called them that because her daughter Caroline Isabelle Sandidge, the teacher, made a fine small garden easily seen from the kitchen table. Isabelle was one of Grandma's nine children who followed her older sister to California, married her sweetheart Welby, a construction worker with a job there. They had two sweet sons, Donald and Welby Jan, but then, tragically, Welby passed away and she came back to live and raise their sons at home in Edmonton. When veterans and fellow bikers saw this small plaque on the back of Bill Demrow's Motorcycle Hearse, they told the owner, "You knew Joe Gadberry, didn't you." But Demrow told them the truth, he didn't.
