James Hatfield of the Plum Point community said the Columbia Gulf pipe line blow off, "Sounded like a whole bunch of jet airplane motors." He was startled by the LOUD - just as Adair County Emergency Manager Mike Lewis had warned, though he didn't know it at the time it first occurred between 4pm & 5pmCT, and that even the horses between his house house and original settler Plum Pointer Billy Rice just went on about their grazing. At first, he said, he remembered the nearby air strip, and wondered if maybe some jet aircraft had landed there. That strip, however, built about a half century ago by Randall Pyles, et al, was built to accommodate small planes and bigger Lincoln Town Cars for celebrities such as the then Mayor of Columbia. Hatfield's family goes back in recent times to Logan County, West-BG-Virginia, of feuding fame. He's no longer into that kind of thing, and is enjoying the serene peaceful co-existence ideals of Rice and others he's met in the neighborhood, which, until a year or so before his death, included Joe Gadberry, who was knowledgeable of feuds but took no part in them, not even when invited to do so, when an opportune chance to join kinsman Bannard Gadberry in his, Bannard's feud with the Kelly Bros. in a Chicago bar. According to a reliable spokesperson, Shannon Sexton, this Kwik Lube, the second owned by Mendel & Bruce Sexton and LaGene & Shannon Sexton, may be in operation as early as August - no later than early September - 2017. Sixth District Constable Jason Rector manned the checkpoint south of the site of the Columbia Gas Transmission 'Blow Off' just over the trees in this photo, and across KY 551/Knifley Road, for Plum Point Baptist Church, center of photo. For Rector, the blow off was nothing new. He's heard them and often seen them all of his life. His thoughts were that they are needed every four years. He said that for this one, Emergency Manager Mike Keltner had asked for the road to be shut down, but that roads department(s), wanted it kept open, and it was. Pipeline 'blow-off' seen from opposite side of KY 551 2017-07-08 - Area of Milepoint 6, near Plum Point Baptist Church - Photo by Ed Waggener, ColumbiaMagazine.com(c). When Adair County Emergency Management Director warned that the Columbia Gas Tranmission pipeline blow-off would be LOUD, it was a bit of an understatement. Old time residents have been used to the noise, some say the blow-offs occur about every four years, but in the area with so many newcomers it was bewildering and disconcerting, to say the least, when, with little warning from the company, the blow-off first sounded before being completed in about one hour. Older area residents remember times when agents from Columbia Gas alerted everyone, in person, in earshot of the event. Many say that the sound has changed over the years, from a higher pitched, shrill sound to the equally loud but more bass sound of today.
