D & D Longview Farm: Tomatoes with taste & character

Danny & Debbie Burris were at the Adair County Farmers Market with heirloom tomatoes, all with taste and character. I chose this bargain bag - which weighed more, cost less, and were more knurledy than others. One tomato, covered in the photo, in the bottom of the basket, was the biggest and it was all knurls. Couldn't determine which variety of heirloom - 'heritage' if you are from the UK - it was but hoped it might have been a 'hillbilly." Yes, it had priceless taste, made the best lightbread, Miracle Whip, and tomato sandwich I ever ate. The Burrises sell at both the Adair Farmers Market and Farmers Market on the Square. - EW

Tomatoes galore at Margie Rooks' at Adair Farmers Mkt.

The Adair Farmers Market had plenty tomatoes tables today. Margie Rooks, above, had a enough to make a thousand or more tomato sandwiches plus a few dozen servings of fried green tomatoes and a couple of salads. Today saw the best supply of the season. The market is open Tuesday and Friday, 10am-6pmCT. - EW

The specialty tomatoes are just a few of the wide variety of tomatoes offered today - perhaps the largest offering of tomatoes this season here, The Prices are owners of Ninevah Land Farm, Portland, KY, and are regulars at both the farmers market at the extension office and at FM2. Business was brisk this morning as buyers took advantage of the rather coolish weather. Vendors will be at the market from 6am until 10amCT, today, or until supplies run out. - EW. West Sixth Brewing Company co-owner Joe Kuosman's goal is to make a new variety of craft beer using only ingredients that are grown or that originate in Kentucky.Birch Bragg, left, and Kuosman string up a hop trellis of baling twine for the vines to grow on. The one-third acre hop yard contains 325 hop vines. Kentucky's craft brewing industry is now booming, according to Tyler Madison, who manages the Kentucky Department of Agriculture's Grape, Wine, and Spirits Program. from Ted Sloan

The restaurant scene is changing in Liberty, KY. Hardee's is new in town, located on Wallace Wilkinson Blvd. This was the stage of construction on Saturday, 15 Jul 2017. Just a block or so south of a New Hardee's, next door to H & R Block, a new Lee's Famous Recipe store is underway. The brand is returning. A store north of the city's new Hardee's was a landmark for travelers on U.S. 127 for several decades. Paired photo
