Trees of Kentucky: Princess tree? 2017-07-22 - Russell County, KY - Photo by Linda Waggener, ColumbiaMagazine.com(c). We always wondered what this tree, with it's huge leaves were when they covered the hillside outside one of the most delightful restaurants ever in South Central Kentucky, above then Jamestown Boat Dock before the Webb Bros. takeover. The leaves had an exotic look, and largely masked the view of the lake and dock. Cursory research indicates it may be a Princess Tree, a cousin of catalpa. Anybody know? The Princess tree does have showy blossoms - and we've never seen this huge leafed tree bloom. Buildings & Grounds, Backpack program have good news 2017-07-22 - Adair County School District Conference Room, 1204 Greensburg Street, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener, ColumbiaMagazine.com(c). At left, Steve Turner, FRAM Coordinator, among other administrative duties, was recognized at the July 20, 2017 Adair County School Board Meeting for bringing back $1,000 won for the Adair County Schools Backpack program, which helps make sure every Adair County student has nutrition over the weekend. During the school day, every Adair County Student receives free breakfast & lunch. Turner's office coordinates essential registration to be completed for the program. (See Food Service for registration information.) At right David Jones, Director of Maintenance, reported on the readiness of the campus for the 2017-2018 school year. Improvements now on schedule are: Lighting on Col Casey Drive, new marquee lighting at the Col. Casey Drive, new HVAC and roof for ACHS, and necessary painting at all schools. Sun rises on The Giant Wheel 2017-07-21 - Goshen, IN - Photo by Bryan Blair. The Giant Wheel awaits visitors as the sun rises at the 2017 Elkhart County 4-H Fair in Goshen, Indiana, where today is Opening Day. Goshen is 359 miles almost due north of Columbia, KY. The Fair, one of the largest 4-H county fairs in the nation, is recognized across the nation as one of the best Fairs in the USA. The nine day event features five nights of big name entertainment, two performances of a sanctioned rodeo, a tractor pull and a demolition derby. The event is managed by Adair County native Bryan Blair, formerly on the KY State Fair staff, who is credited with reviving the Taylor County Fair in 1998.
