Adair County Middle School Principal Alma Rich beamed with school pride introducing a star 8th grader, Sadie Kemp, who led the Pledge of Allegiance at the Thu 21 Sep 2017 regular meeting of the Adair County School Board. Sadie entered a photograph in the Kentucky State Beta Convention 2017 contest and won a statewide third place award. The photo qualified for the National Beta contest, and was fifth in the nation! Sadie is the daughter of David and Summer Kemp of Columbia, KY. Light was still streaming in on the conference room just before the 6pmCT start of the last day of summer, September 21, 2017, as the meeting awaited the call to order by Board Chair Lisa Burton, second from right. Others present for the quick-paced meeting, are, from left, Mike Harris (Div. 5), Daniel Adams (2), Student member Lauren McQuaide, Dr. Pam Stephens, Superintendent; (Burton), (seat usually held by board attorney Coleman Hurt; and seat usually held by board member Jonathan Gaskins/4) and Board Vice Chair Terry Harvey (1). The meeting was relatively brief, with mostly upbeat news, except for reports of dire state funding cuts affecting all state streams except for the largest one, SEEK - an irony in the face of the dramatic improvements public schools are experiencing now. The hammer on the state retirement system has not fallen totally yet. Dr. Stephens said that already, concern for how the state handles existing plans has caused the system to lose three experienced teachers. Silent City 2017 will have first-time re-enactor: Murrell Burton 2017-09-22 - Burton Real Estate, 408 Public Square, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener. Murrell Burton says that he's a happy man, in no need of additional fulfilling enterprises. "I like to do a little appraising, sell some real estate, and do a little auctioneering," he says modestly. And he does a lot of what he calls 'a little.' There are a great many other facets of his life that come to mind for which he has fame. He's a historian and he's a performer and he's a singer and a Tennessee Ernie Ford look-alike. Come's naturally, then that he would be added to the cast of re-enactors for Silent City 2017, as Judge Rollin T. Hurt. The 11th Silent City starts at 5pmCT, Monday, October 2, 2017, at the Adair County Public Library, 307 Greensburg Street, Columbia, KY, and is performed after a short three block walk to the Columbia Cemetery, 307 Campbellsville Street, Columbia, KY. Other re-enactors this year are Laura Gupton, LeeAnn Jessee, Mike Watson, Murrell Burton, Mr. Richard Phelps, and J.D. & Ellen Zornes. Scenic KY: Crossing the Kentucky River 2017-09-21 - The Kentucky River bridge, heading south on Hwy 68 - Photo by Linda Waggener, ColumbiaMagazine.com. Heading south from Lexington, KY, I marveled at the beautiful scenery winding down through the hills of the Bluegrass and inching over the bridge on Hwy 68 where it crosses the Kentucky River. This photo was taken (without looking off the road) from the good lane, paralleling the unfinished lane under construction, wondering why I'd chosen that road, praying it would hold up under the vehicles crossing it. If you're in a hurry, do not take Hwy 68/Harrodsburg Road between Lexington and Harrodsburg, KY. However, if you have plenty of time and a desire to see some of the most incredible scenery in the Bluegrass, go ahead and travel it. This photograph was taken at the stoplight for work being done on the Jessamine County bridge where Hwy 68 crosses over the Kentucky River. Looking left, while waiting for the green light to travel on into Mercer County, and enjoy the historic Boone Tunnel carved through the Kentucky Palisades.
