One can rarely go to any event in District One or major event in any other District without encountering Magistrate Burton, whether it is a Drug Forum, a Fish Fry, a community work day, clean up, free tipping day at Transfer Station, and for sure, farmers markets and Downtown Festival. Kids of all ages will be reassured that what's shaping up as the Biggest Downtown Days ever, opening Friday, October 13, 2017, will include the carnival, with rides and lights - the amusement company even has it's own back up power plant - in its traditional location. Last night, October 10, 2017, as the 2017 Ronald McDonald Wish List Drop off was completing a highly successful drive, this ride was already in Downtown Days staging mode. Watching the complex planning of the festival go together, as if in an internal time lapse camera, is a favorite time in Columbia for many. Smith store glistened on a fall day, a reassuring sign that the historic landmark continues to be loved and protected. For many, it is more an icon of the lure of Russell County than - well, Lure Lodge, Wolf Creek Dam, even the Star Theatre or the Doughboy. Though those, too, are irreplaceable. For many, though, Unhurried Russell County, the farms and fields and streams away from the impoundment are the real, lasting attractions.
