Field trip finds as exciting as archeological discoveries

2017-10-14 - Louisville, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener, ColumbiaMagazine.com.
Matilda Anne had a bag full of swag from a field day at a Jefferson County farm - an amazing array of artifacts to share with Mema, Linda Waggener on a perfect Friday afternoon in the park. At this point, late in the presentation, before the sample from the bamboo 'tree' and the spider showed up, she prepared a bowl of pea soup in a hickory nut shell. Matilda Anne, in the tradition of Marcum women from Metcalfe County, demanded that the spider be killed, but her father begged for mercy, "Let's let the little spider live," he said. And Matilda agreed, and Mema was pleased -- until she found that the spider had found refuge on her shoulder. But it all ended well. The spider was flicked away, with no harm being done. Along the way, she met a new very best friend. There was more drama - which ended well, but those are long stories with a very happy ending. Grandparents Ed & Linda Waggener were enthralled: With Matilda Anne's maturity and presentations and her enthusiasm for discovery, and with the the several one-act plays in real life, the best 'theatre' there is. - Granddad Ed

Epicurean Kentuckian: Puzzling Pie Peaks Pique pre-Pie Peek. What's in it?

2017-10-14 - County Line Diner, 7393 Campbellsville Road, Columbia, KY - Photo by Sandy Ford, Proprietor & Pie Photographer.
Meringue Pie Peaks are for many the most delicious part of the pastry. Has anyone else ever wished they were were as richer Porter, Mr. P, or Peco and could afford to just lift of the meringue and eat with no concern about what was beneath? I know I have. But what's underneath here is also, for those of us who think Butterscotch is kitchens' greatest gift to humankind, being richer than the three P's or Roosevelt, might want to lift off the meringue, hand it to the lowly cake-eaters, and eat only the filling. I know I would. But in my circumstances, just a slice will do. - EW
