Mackie Jo Pennington sings her late dad's favorite song

2017-11-11 - VFW Post 6097, 500 Green Hills Road, Columbia, KY - Photo by Linda Waggener.
Mackie Jo Pennington, left, sang her Dad's favorite song, "Soldier Boy," at the VFW breakfast, and then Jan Overstreet, right, took the mike to lead on "Proud to be an American" which they sang together to a standing ovation from the crowd. The unforgettable moment took place this morning in the program at the annual Columbia Walmart Supercenter & United Citizens Bank Veteran's Program. The emotion was deepened remembering that Mackie's father couldn't be in the hall this year. He died just over six months ago. Creed Lacy (1934-2017) had been accorded full military rites by the post at his committal service in McClister Cemetery on Wednesday, April 19, 2017. Many in the audience were still remembering standing on that beautiful hill in Fairplay with the taps still sounding in their memory, this stalwart, reliable, salt-of-the-earth good man, beloved by the thousands of Adair County students he carried safely to and from school in his 42 years as a school bus driver.
