Signs of the Times: Love Nails at Pinewood Shopping Center

2017-11-25 - Pinewood Shopping Center, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener, ColumbiaMagazine.com.
Another sign went up this week in Pinewood Shopping Center. This one for Love Nails. Shannon Sexton, a co-owner of Adair Kwik Lube in the center, about progress in the center, said things are really moving in both Pinewood Shopping Center and across the road in Holladay place, where the new Lee's Famous Recipe site is quickly being transformed by Pyles Excavating for the new fried chicken store. Shadow Art on The Lindsey Wilson/Jeffries Building

2017-11-25 - Exit Corner, Jamestown Street from Public Square, Downtown Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener.
Catching the fire escape on the Lindsey Wilson/Jeffries Building Friday morning, I wondered where the device fits in history, and how it came to be in the first place, and whether it is unique. It is fascinating to study how it works, and wonder whether it did, in fact, ever save a life. One wonders whether real estate folks call this a three story building with a basement or a four story building, since the beautifully arched door lower left is ground level, and was placed there, at street level, for the possibility of retail entrance to a shop in a future repurposing. Maybe for a Rathskeller, today. - EW

Favorite old picture postcard: Russell & Co. building ca. 1909

2017-11-24 - Entrance corner from Jamestown Street to Public Square, Columbia, KY - Photo from the collection of Mike Watson.
Here is a favorite old photo - postcard photo -of the Russell & Company building not long after it's genesis. Most know it, of course, as the old Lerman Bros. Department Store building. Mike Watson

Having a happy holiday weekend, kitten style

2017-11-24 - Burkesville, Cumberland County, \\ KY - Photo by Jane Todd.
While humans may be making a mad dash for shopping on this Black Friday 2017, the life of a kitten like me continues to revolve around the really important stuff of life -- running, jumping, exploring, pouncing, napping and stretching.

Columbia Sanitation Dept. making regular Friday run

2017-11-24 - Jones-Wright Addition, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener, ColumbiaMagazine.com.
For those of us who woke up like a goose in a new world . . . today is Friday, not Monday. Some things continued to Thanksgiving unaffected by the holidays or shopping days, including the ever reliable City of Columbia Sanitation Department. The service is running today November 24, 2017, on its regular Friday routes. If the trash stacks up at your home, it's not because of the Columbia City Sanitation. They made their appointed rounds on Thanksgiving Day, too. Photo taken around 6:42amCT. - EW
