Be on the lookout for Frost Flowers when you walk
2017-11-26 - Cumberland County, KY - Photo by Billy Joe Fudge. On this frosty Sunday morning, we're revisiting a discovery by an admired writer/photographer who reported Frost Flowers 'growing' nearby in 2009. That was when naturalist Billy Joe Fudge first brought the beautiful creations to our attention. He'd found a large patch of Frost Flowers on the Chowning Farm at Amandaville in northern Cumberland Co., KY. He advised that they are so delicate, the slightest touch begins an immediate meltdown. By sharing the discovery, he shared the blessing with all of us who were awed by our first sighting of them. When reading time allows, click here and revisit some 80 Frost Flower notes and pictures in ColumbiaMagazine.com archives.

Birds of Kentucky: Murder mystery
2017-11-26 - Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener, ColumbiaMagazine.com. These two crows were spotted in a tree Saturday, November 25, 2017, occasionally flying out together, apparently just to foil the shot. Bird watchers put a lot of stock in the meanings of crow behavior. The flight was only from a tree thirty feet away, which may or may not count as "two crows flying together." Still we took heart from that indicator - and you know why, don't you? And you also know why the situation was short of murder. Comments are welcome. - EW

2017-11-26 - Blue Raider Stadium, 928 Russell Road, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener, ColumbiaMagazine.com. For the past two weekends, Blue Raider Stadium, Columbia has been the site of NAIA national football series playoffs, drawing huge crowds to the community. When this photo was taken it looked as though the skein was in danger, with the score 17-21 the wrong way, late in the 3rd Quarter. Minutes later, the most successful Blue Raider Team - nationally No. 4 - ever, recaptured the lead. But, in the end, were upset by visiting No. 5 ranked Southern Oregon University.

2017-11-26 - Main Street, Russell Springs, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener, ColumbiaMagazine.com. Royce Campbell & Sons Trucking of Windsor, KY, decked out with a Christmas wreath, made an impressive sight coming South on Main Street, with shiny chrome and bright blue paint perfectly complementing the Christmas lights. Right behind him, from the Russell Springs suburbs, was Royville'& Beckham Ridge's own Lisa Fisher-Clark, piloting the WAVE-mobile for 92.7 FM. The weather was perfect, with shirtsleeve warmth and perfectly blue November skies and a really large turnout. - EW
