In early December 1932, Franklin D. Roosevelt was the Presidential nominee, having crushed incumbent Herbert Hoover a month earlier. The Great Depression was in its fourth year and showed no signs of letting up; in fact, it worsened almost daily with banks closing, industrial production sharply declining, and unemployment soaring, and as Christmas approached, there was little cause for good cheer for most Americans. Still, a number of Columbia merchants ran gift idea ads in hopes of attracting the few discretionary dimes and dollars.
