JIM: Christmas Wish List - 17 Dec 1958 - Nu Art

2017-12-17 - Nowadays 212 Public Square, Columbia, KY building - Photo from the collection of JIM.
Perusing the pages of the December 17, 1958 brought a lot of familiar business names to the front, names such as Columbia Nursery, The Fabric Shop, Downey & Wolford Auction Service, Ed's Ky. Auto Store. Harper's Market, Columbia General Appliance, Collins Buick, Western Auto, Peoples Loan Company (202 Public Square), Lowe's Drugs, Adair Farmers Service Store, Rice Hardware, Overstreet & Holmes, Jerry's Beauty Shop (Lindsey Wilson St.), Scott's Barber Shop (Travis Scott, prop.), The Style Shop, The Firestone Store, Corner Drug, Kroger, Owens Men's Wear (112 Public Square), Young's Rexall Drug, Lany Bray & Co., Reece's Radio & TV Service, and Marshall Shoe Store, among others. Only a few of these establishments listed a telephone number (local prefix FU 4 for those who did, of course) and many were located by the same trisyllabic phrase: "On the square."

Many of the ads were larger, more eye-catching, and better adorned than the one from Nu Art Studio, but none perhaps better caught the spirit of the times than this one. - JIM

Miss Vicky: Undeniable trail of evidence of cow crime

2017-12-17 - Miss Victorias Pampered Angus Range, Greater Bliss, KY - Photo by Miss Vicky.
A total of 16 are implicated in this littering crime - nine cows who ought to have known better, and 7 impressionable calves hanging out with the wrong crowd. Miss Vicky, whose patience is tried and who would have had the full force of the law on people-types doing a comparable thing, writes, "Seems they pushed the cattle trailer door open where I store empty feed sacks and proceeded to look for one with a little feed in it since they were so terribly hungry," adding, "It's only been about 16 hours since they last dined on 100 pounds of grain. No rest for a busy farm gal." Clicking Read More accesses the latest New Columbia/Greater Bliss/The Flat Woods community news letter, where most of the time, at least when a crime wave doesn't hit, a good time is had by all.
