Jeb, Central Office mascot, makes command appearance

No glory hound, he: Jeb the 3 lb. 4 oz. Golden Poo, made a pre-meeting appearance after appeals from the audience and a request from Dr. Pam Stephens that Jeb enter the board room. He's a favorite with all the Central Office staff; Renae Smith, the apparent Jeb Fan Club President, called Jeb the office's mascot, and an additional comment was heard about the circumstance of Jeb's situation at the Goode home, "Her son just got married and Anita got a dog." Jeb exhibited impeccable manners. One day he's won't seem so tiny. Golden Poos can reach 15-20 pounds as adults, Anita said. The King for the moment exited the room prior to the meeting. _ EW

For this one, I made no effort to curtail the text to cutline length. I first encountered Miss Babak's essay over a dozen years ago and it has stuck like glue to my generally teflon memory.
As Christmas 1945 approached, war time rationing had eased, peace time production had increased, and many -- most -- who served in the late conflict either were home already, on the way, or had the promise of soon being so. Merchants' shelves were well stocked, and a Christmas greeting from Southern Continental Telephone Company reminded that "For the first time since 1940, our country will enjoy a peaceful holiday season."
A most eloquent expression of the general sentiment of that long ago era, written by 16-year-old Hazel Mae Babak of near Jamestown, appeared in the November 29, 1945, edition of the Russell County News:
"Thanksgiving and Christmas
"Thanksgiving and Christmas soon will be celebrated throughout America, celebrated as never before in our lifetime for this is the year of Victory -- and Peace.
"Reverently we will give thanks for the glory so dearly bought. Gratefully our carols will rise to each of those who have not yet returned. Silently and prayerfully we will remember those who will never return. We, here at home, safe in the land we love, preserved from the ravages of war, know that this year we have cause to keep the great days sacred.
"So we return once more to the old ways and the old customs, to the family gatherings 'round the festive board, to the bounty that is ours as harvest days are over. Again the Christmas tree will glisten, the Yule logs blaze and the presents made ready for Santa's visit. Again 'Merry Christmas' will echo and re-echo as there is truly Peace on Earth, Good Will to Men.
"This should be a happy year, a year of memory forever, for this is the year of victory and peace."
"Our wish -- the wish of all us at home -- is that your Thanksgiving be the most thankful you ever had and your Christmas the merriest."
The ad for the Brown Drug Co. appeared in the December 19th edition of the News.

Crusade funded School Bus showcased at school board meeting

Representatives of the Breeding Area Volunteer Fire Department, the Columbia/Adair County Fire Department, and the Knifley Area Volunteer Fire Department were honored guests at the Adair County School Board last night for a special Crusade for Children segment showcasing the Crusade's latest gift, a $57-58,000 (exact figure unavailable last night), which partially funded this new $111,000 Adair County School Bus No. 46. Above, with lighting furnished by a C/AC fire truck, several of the honorees posed with the truck, including most, but not all of the following: From Knifley:F Lt. Joe Dickson. From Breeding: Chief (and School Board member, Division 1) Terry Harvey, Dennis Rowe, Jonathan Beams, Nathan Burns (whose wife Cassie was present but not in photo); and from Columbia/Adair County Fire Department: Blake Flatt, Adair Chief Terry Flatt, Tyler Solum, Donald Hare, Grant Loy, Brandon Minton, and Charlie Crawhorn, the Crusade Chairman. A not yet fully completed video soon to air on WHAS featured Bus No. 46 driver Della Howard and many of the students who use the bus each school day. - EW

School meeting has new look for December meeting

The Adair County School Board had a new look for the December 18, 2017 special regular meeting. Above, the members at the dais and the audience were watching a preview video presentation about the new Special Education School Bus, paid for in large part of the Crusade for Children. At the dais, are, from left, Student School Board Member Lauren McQuaide, Board Member Daniel Adams, Dr. Pam Stephens, superintendent; Board Chair Lisa Burton; member Jonathan Gaskins, and member Terry Harvey. In the audience were representatives of the county's fire departments, who coordinate the Crusade for Children fundraising. For the first time, each Board member had an assigned Chromebook for use during the meeting. - EW

Christmas Lights 2017 - Greensburg Street icon

Nothing is more reassuring to old-timers that Christmas in Columbia's grand tradition continues, than this residence on Greensburg Street. Most of us can't remember when it wasn't brightly lit during the Yuletide season. It always reminds me of our mother, Audrey Chelf Waggener, who's world, most of her life, revolved around a big house on Jamestown Hill. She didn't need to go anywhere to be satisfied with life, save regularly attending services at the Columbia Baptist Church. . . except at Christmas time. If it weren't offered, she requested a trip around town to see the Christmas lights. Any child honored to navigate the town for her, always knew that Greensburg Street would be her biggest delight. I can't remember a time when this house, from the days it was owned by Clay Smith (Bea Beard corrected this; the house above is next door to the former Clay Smith House; she believes that the Huston Rogers family lived in the house at the same time I'm remembering) I believe, didn't draw the most comment. Mom would have loved to see it again, as it appeared last night after the school board met. Thanks, Greensburg Street. - EW. Photo Mon 18, 2017.
