A peace time draft was re-instituted, and toward the end of the year, a recession started which would last well into 1949. Still, the economy was much improved from the pre-war years, and many thousands who had served in the war were taking (or already had taken) advantage of the GI Bill to better their lives. That year, the December 22 edition of the News carried two dozen seasonal greetings from area businesses in lieu of advertisements for goods and services. Today, Thursday, Dec. 21, is the first day of the official 2017 winter season, however rain is predicted, not snow as in this photo of the first snow of the season. The light dusting of snow in this picture was taken at the corner of Toria Road where it meets Blue Ridge Circle.
