Christmas for the Children of Kabale: Outside the new school

2017-12-24 - Kabale, Uganda - Photo from Billy Joe Fudge.
The new building is a sturdy mortared building with a concrete foundation and floor. Much of the old facility has no floor or modern amenities. Notice the chimneys for heat as well as for cooking. Although Kabale is in the tropics, it is 6600 feet above sea level and can become quite cold on occasion. On another note, almost all the window panes had to be replaced. Things are so bad there that someone had stolen all the panes of glass. - Billy Joe Fudge

Christmas 2017: the elf on the shelf in the coffeeshop

2017-12-24 - Shelbyville, KY - Photo by Linda Waggener, columbiamagazine.com.
An elf was discovered recently on the shelf above the fridge at Sixth & Main Coffeehouse. Matilda Anne, at left, points excitedly and alerts everyone to its location. The Elf On The Shelf has grown into a Christmas tradition since 2005. It tells how Santa's "scout elves" hide where children live to observe behavior -- it's a real help to Santa who must know who's been naughty and/or nice. The book explains that "scout elves" get their magic abilities to observe and fly to the North Pole and back, helping Santa, in only one way, the elf must be named and be loved by a child. There was plenty of love on the faces of these two. The book tells how the magic might disappear if the scout elf is touched, so when the rule is broken, there's a system to get back on track. Matilda, using her first grade abilities, printed prescribed methods of exactly how her cousins could get back on track after having touched their elf. Hailey, at right, in her kindergarten reasoning, was not too disturbed about risking the elf movement but was open to the discussion and documentation. Granddad and I don't know which is right, but we were extremely proud of both for their adult negotiations over said elf management. Clicking this link gets the story read aloud. For more elf-tertainment, clicking this link goes to an elf video. Enjoy the magic of the season! -- LW
