Attention to signs at entrances to the city has been growing since questions on the oldest one on Greensburg Road have come up more and more often. Mayor Curtis Hardwick asked for and received Council agreement at the February meeting for the large wood sign across the road from Downey's Mill/Blair Park and Recreation Center on Greensburg Road to be addressed as soon as weather permits. The Columbia/Adair Utilities District (CAUD), Burkesville Street Phase of the utility's Downtown Phase, is making remarkable progress, already in the 400 block of Burkesville Street, today, Thursday, February 8, 2018, in an open trench phase through the yard of what is popularly known of as the Carl Hurt Home. Stotts Construction Company, Inc., is the contractor. So far, their work has required few road closures. But motorists are reminded to drive very carefully in the area and to reduce risks to the workers. When Chelf Motor Co. became Columbia Motor Co. - Aug 1928 2018-02-08 - South one third of 210 Greensburg Street, Columbia, KY - Photo from the collection of JIM. There's a lot of information in the accompanying story, when L.R. Chelf sold his Columbia Chevrolet dealership and The Columbia Motor Company became the local Chevrolet dealer, which remained in the location until the dealership was moved to the former Overstreet & Rice in the 300 block of Greensburg Street. The building closer to town was occupied for most of the next two decades by Coomer's Store, now a part of Stotts-Phelps-McQueary Funeral Home. And interesting note, in 1928, the funeral home was Grissom & Patteson. The Grissom part of the partnership is now located at 200 Campbellsville Street and is Grissom-Martin Funeral Home.
