New speed check sign on Burkesville Street 2018-02-13 - Burkesville Street, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener, ColumbiaMagazine.com. The City of Columbia Police Department is working on two solutions to the speeding traffic on Burkesville Street: One is the installation of a KYTC flashing sign, a loaner, or, two, parking police cars with lights flashing to protect construction workers. The sign above lets motorists know the speed they are traveling, and appears to be very effective. Columbia Police Chief Jason Cross said after the Tuesday meeting at City Council that the sign had arrived and was installed. He said that the Kentucky Highway Department designated the location, and would not allow its relocation to the CAUD - Stotts Construction site, where a few speeding drivers are endangering construction workers there. Post Office mystery dog identified, lives next door: He's Buddy 2018-02-13 - Columbia, KY - Photo by Linda Waggener, ColumbiaMagazine.com. Twice last week photos were run of a mystery dog that appeared for several hours a day, checking out every patron, at the US Post Office on Burkesville Street. Today the mystery was solved when I came out of the building and heard a voice call from the neighbor's property, "Here Buddy, come here!" The mystery dog came alert, lunged past and bounded toward the voice of Houston Murray, leaning against a tree in the yard next door. He said Buddy is a five-month-old mix and lives in the garage. When he's let out to play each day, Houston had no idea his dog had become a puzzle at the Post Office. It's good to know the curious dog has a good home. - LW. Stotts Construction Co., Inc. has installed new waterlines to the intersection of Burkesville Street at its intersection with West (lower part of the picture) and East Frazier Avenue at the close of work on Tuesday, February 13, 2018. The caged trackhoe is inside a bore pit being dug to continue directional drilling from this point by the Columbia Masonic Lodge Building into the 500 block of Burkesville Street, Columbia, KY. Despite signs, workers were put at great risk by a few motorists whose speed was estimated at 45-55- and even 65 mph cresting the hill - until a state inspector in a KYTC vehicle activated flashing blue lights, after which traffic was described as more like a slow moving funeral procession.
